The 1960s teenage girl is a pop culture icon, but the real experiences of women during that era were more complex. A study conducted on girls growing up in Britain between the 1950s and 1970s revealed diverse experiences, with some enjoying opportunities in London while others faced poverty and limited leisure options. Access to education and professional opportunities for girls was uneven, with many leaving school at 15 without qualifications. The fear of getting pregnant out of wedlock was prevalent, as access to contraception and sex education was limited. Early marriage was common, but easier access to divorce from 1969 provided a way out for some women.
Femme Fest returns for third year
The 3rd Festival for the Promotion of Gender Equality, Femme Fest Cyprus, will take place on 18 and 19 May at the Nicosia Municipal Garden. The festival aims to raise awareness on gender equality, promote discussion of gender issues, and give a platform to women from different sectors to share their stories. The event will include discussions on various topics such as women’s reproductive rights, gender-based violence, and workshops on gender stereotypes. Over 50 organizations will participate, and there will be cultural performances, workshops for children, and food and drinks available. Admission and participation in all activities are free of charge.

‘Back to the dark ages’: forced sterilisation still exists
Forced sterilisation of people with disabilities is legal or not explicitly banned in Cyprus and 11 other EU countries. This practice is considered a violation of human rights and can be a form of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Despite being a criminal offense in Cyprus, mental health laws allow the procedure with guardian consent. Fear, lack of education about sex, and concerns about parenting responsibilities are cited as reasons for forced sterilisation, although less invasive alternatives like the coil are available. The European Disability Forum has campaigned to ban forced sterilisation, but efforts have not been successful in some cases.

Gender equality will take 300 years to achieve worldwide according to the UN’s women’s organization. The 3rd Femme Fest Cyprus will be held on May 18 and 19 in Nicosia, aiming to address gender issues and provide a platform for women from all walks of life. The festival will include discussions, workshops, events, and kiosks on women’s issues, with a focus on women’s reproductive rights, gender violence, gender stereotypes, and femicide. The event will also feature activities such as Women Who Inspire Us and thematic centers highlighting the history of women’s rights.
