Our View: If private company was in charge, Nicosians would have a pool by now

The Nicosia municipal swimming pool will be closed for the fifth consecutive summer season in 2024 due to the public sector’s inefficiency and lack of competence. The pool needed a major overhaul after 30 years, but the project has been delayed significantly. The pool was handed over to the Cyprus Sports Organisation for training purposes, leaving the public without an affordable swimming option for several years.

Cyprus has managed to promote important reforms and launch public investments through the Recovery Plan, with more than 40 sponsorship projects announced. The amount available through the sponsorship projects is €460 million. – Candidacies were submitted for the most complex elections ever held in Cyprus, where people would be voting for Members of European Parliament and an unprecedented number of local government officials.
– There are 63 candidates for the six seats in the European Parliament and 3,232 candidates for the local authority elections, including school boards.
– The vote for local government includes voting for municipal councillors, a deputy mayor, a mayor, and a district governor.
– The introduction of an elected district governor was not in the government reform plans but was added by a party without clear justification.
– The reform of local government was recommended in 2013 due to the costly, inefficient, and poor service provided by the existing system.
– The creation of new municipalities was influenced by political parties’ interests in creating positions for their members rather than streamlining services.
– The reform turned into a farce due to horse-trading by parties, resulting in a costly system that may not address the waste of public money.
– The authorities of the district governor and mayors remain to be seen how they will be exercised.

The 3rd Femme Fest Cyprus will be held on May 18 and 19 in Nicosia, aiming to address gender issues and provide a platform for women from all walks of life. The festival will include discussions, workshops, events, and kiosks on women’s issues, with a focus on women’s reproductive rights, gender violence, gender stereotypes, and femicide. The event will also feature activities such as Women Who Inspire Us and thematic centers highlighting the history of women’s rights.

Nicosia municipality declares buildings dangerous after inspections

The Nicosia Municipality has identified several buildings as dangerous during inspections, especially in areas of special character. Trained engineers/technicians determine if the buildings pose a danger and declare them as such according to Cypriot legislation. Owners of these buildings are urged to contact the Technical Service of the Municipality to address the danger. Failure to do so may result in the Municipality taking action to eliminate the risk, imposing fines, or initiating a criminal case. The buildings declared as dangerous are located at various addresses in different parishes within Nicosia.
