Paphos man gets seven years for burglaries, car thefts, weapons
A 35-year-old man in Paphos was sentenced to seven years in prison for burglaries, car thefts, possession of a weapon, and explosives.

Three people arrested on suspicion of committing dozens of burglaries in Paphos will appear in criminal court on June 25. The burglaries occurred over three and a half years, resulting in the theft of goods worth a total of €865,000.
Man admits to cannabis charges in Paphos court
A 29-year-old man admitted to charges of importing and possession with intent to supply 28 kilograms of cannabis, as well as money laundering from illegal activities. He was arrested at Paphos airport on January 31 after police found the drugs in his bags. The state lab confirmed the seized packages contained cannabis. The man has been in custody since his arrest. The case will resume on June 20, and the court has ordered that he remains in custody until then.
Long jail sentences for drug traffickers
Two men, aged 27 and 35, were sentenced to 15 and nine years in prison for drug trafficking, drug possession, and money laundering. The 35-year-old’s property worth €48,900 was also seized. The crime took place on July 31, 2023, when 27kgs of cannabis and 12kgs of cocaine were seized during a raid by the Paphos drug squad.
Kisk thief handed five year sentence
The same perpetrator robbed a kiosk in Chloraka twice within 48 hours using the same method, resulting in a five-year imprisonment after being found guilty by the Paphos Criminal Court.
Parliament to probe dropping of corruption cases
Parliament is set to hold hearings on the termination of disciplinary proceedings against contractors previously implicated in corruption and bribery. Akel MP Irini Charalambidou, who is on the House ethics committee, plans to discuss the matter soon. The Contractors Council, responsible for registering and overseeing contractors, recently decided to end disciplinary actions against companies involved in the Paphos sewerage board (Sapa) scandal. In 2015, the Paphos criminal court found the town’s mayor and several municipal councillors guilty of accepting bribes. Two companies, Medcon and Nemesis, were implicated but received immunity for testifying for the prosecution. Medcon still has an active license with ‘A’ status, while Nemesis is no longer listed under that name. The Contractors Council initiated a disciplinary investigation in 2016 but did not complete it. The new board of the Contractors Council dropped the probe in early February, citing the passage of time and potential abuse of process. Paphos Mayor Phedonas Phedonos has urged the attorney-general’s office to investigate why the disciplinary probe was not completed. The Contractors Council had a damning dossier on the implicated contractors since February 2016. The council’s board is appointed by the cabinet and includes officials from the Public Works Department and a senior state’s attorney.
Custody extended for Paphos attempted murder suspect
A 34-year-old suspect is accused of attempted murder in Paphos and will remain in custody until the next trial on February 19. The prosecution argued for continued custody due to the risk of flight and the possibility of the suspect committing other offenses. The Paphos Criminal Court allowed the defence lawyer time to examine new evidence and scheduled a hearing for 9:30 am on February 19. The accused denies all charges, which stem from an incident on September 24 of the previous year, where the suspect allegedly shot a 31-year-old outside his home in Psathi, causing injuries. The victim’s relatives subdued the suspect until he was arrested. The charges against the suspect include attempted murder, illegal possession and transportation of a firearm, and explosive materials.
