Wizz Air is celebrating its 20th anniversary next month and has been a key player in Cyprus’ aviation industry since establishing a base at Larnaca International Airport in 2010. The airline has received awards for its environmental practices and sustainability efforts. In 2023, Wizz Air played a significant role in Cyprus’ record-breaking tourist season by transporting passengers from various key markets. The airline increased its seat capacity by 70% in 2023 and is estimated to have injected €200 million into the Cypriot economy. Wizz Air holds the leading position for passenger numbers at Larnaca Airport and is set to offer 1.3 million seats on 25 routes to 16 countries from Cyprus in 2024. The airline’s presence has created 130 direct jobs and is estimated to support an additional 5,500 jobs in related sectors.
The beaches of north Cyprus have the second worst microplastic pollution in the world. The majority of turtles born in Cyprus are female due to the sex of a turtle being determined by the warmth of its nest, with warmer beaches resulting in fewer males being hatched. Climate change has increased sea temperatures, exacerbating this issue, especially in the Eastern Mediterranean where seas are warming 20% more quickly than the global average. Conservation efforts include shading or relocating nests and incubating eggs in controlled conditions to balance the sex ratio. Microplastics raise the temperature of the sand, negatively affecting turtle hatchlings, and larger plastics pose ingestion and entanglement risks to sea creatures. Research suggests that roughly one in 10,000 turtles survive to maturity. Jessica Mills, an executive at Intrepid Travel and author, has written a children’s book to raise awareness about marine pollution and the importance of protecting sea turtles. The book, “Wendy Wanderlust Wakes Up in Cape Greco,” has sold internationally and part of its proceeds go towards turtle conservation efforts in Cyprus.

All four men suspected of killing Thanasis Kalogeropoulos pleaded not guilty to charges including premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession and transportation of a firearm and ammunition, and vehicle theft and arson. The 22-year-old suspect is also charged with aiding and abetting a murder. An appeal has been lodged at the Supreme Court to annul the order allowing investigators to access telecommunications data from the suspects’ phones. The trial’s next hearing is set for June 11, and the defendants will remain under remand until then. Kalogeropoulos was shot 10 times at close range from a vehicle by two people with a pistol and a Kalashnikov. The 22-year-old is believed to be the mastermind, the 41-year-old is suspected of firing the shots, the 44-year-old owns the house where the murder was planned, and the 21-year-old was allegedly riding the motorcycle used in the getaway.
The defendants in the murder case of Thanasis Kalogeropoulos requested to be tried at the Nicosia Criminal Court instead of Limassol, but their request was denied. The hearing will continue on February 8 at the Limassol court. The four defendants previously appeared in court wearing bulletproof vests and reported harassment by Kalogeropoulos’ family members. They are being held in custody and face charges including premeditated murder. The 41-year-old and the 21-year-old are alleged to be the killers, while the 44-year-old is believed to have organized the plan at his mansion. Kalogeropoulos was murdered in Limassol, and Alexis Mavromichalis, who was also believed to have gangland connections, was murdered in Nicosia, but no one has been arrested for his murder.
