The Cyprus School Theatre Competitions, organised by the Ministry of Education and THOC, are concluding with two ceremonies at the Central Stage of Evi Gavrielidis Hall in Nicosia. The competitions involve thousands of children and educators from across Cyprus staging theatrical performances. The ceremony on April 10th will honour Gymnasiums, with a performance of “Iphigenia” by the Apostolos Pavlos Gymnasium. The ceremony on April 11th will celebrate Lyceums, featuring a performance of “Oedipus Tyrannus” by the Pancyprian Gymnasium. Schools that won first prize were chosen through a draw to perform on the honorary stage of THOC. Educator Stavros Antonopoulos will also be awarded during the April 11th ceremony. Both events are part of the “Theatre in Palm” platform supporting young artists and are not open to the public due to the large number of participants.
The Nicosia International Festival 2024, co-organized by the Nicosia Municipality and Nicosia For Art, invites proposals from professional artists of Cypriot origin or nationality and organizations operating in Cyprus. The festival will occur from September to December 2024, featuring theatre, contemporary dance, and music performances at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre and Garden, including a Parallel Program. The festival’s philosophy emphasizes supporting young artists, promoting cultural acceptance and inclusion, raising awareness through cultural and artistic expression, presenting the realities of illegal invasion and forced displacement, discussing democracy’s fragility and resilience, and giving a platform to all nationalities and cultures in Nicosia. Proposals must align with these objectives and be submitted electronically by 14 April 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
For the seventh consecutive year, The Wall Gallery is enhancing the interior of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Centre to improve the environment for patients and provide young Cypriot artists with an opportunity to display their work. The Wall Gallery has turned the treatment center into a permanent art space, aiming to raise cancer awareness and create a positive atmosphere for patients. The art displayed meets therapeutic environment standards as per a study by the Alternative Brains Rule (ABR) NGO, supported by the Bank of Cyprus. Featured artist Milenko Stevanonic’s work explores the interplay of light and darkness, using memory to combine personal observations into a unified composition that highlights nature’s diversity and principles. Stevanonic, a Serbian painter based in Cyprus, has studied painting, engraving, and design in Belgrade, Florence, and Tokyo. He is a member of the Association of Fine Artists of Serbia and the Visual Artists and Art Theorists Association – Phytorio, participating in international exhibitions and conferences. Previous exhibitions at The Wall Gallery have included works by photographers Silvio Augusto Rusmigo and Eugene Kitsios, and visual artists Constantinos Hadjidimitri, Alexia Tryfon, and Simoni Philippou.
