Cyprus has rented six additional aircraft to help combat forest fires, with four planes coming from Australia and two from Latin America.
Firefighting forces are currently battling wildfires in the communities of Xyliatos and Gourri. The fire in Xyliatos broke out at 15:00 while the fire in Gourri started at 13:54. Ground and aerial forces are working to extinguish both fires, which are ongoing. In addition, the Fire Service is supporting firefighting efforts on the Anthoupoli – Palechori road in the area of Agia Koroni.
Two fires broke out in the Nicosia district on Monday afternoon. One fire started in the community of Gourri at 2pm, while the second fire broke out at the Xyliatos dam at 3pm. Firefighting forces, helicopters, and aircraft from various agencies are working to extinguish the blazes.
Two fires in Limassol, one near Agios Silas and the other in Agios Therapon, are believed to have been deliberately set according to Nikos Logginos, Chief Firefighter. Firefighters in Limassol battled two separate blazes on Friday afternoon, one in Agios Sylas and the other in Choirokitia. Fire crews responded to a total of 31 incidents in a 24-hour period, including 22 fires. One significant blaze engulfed the enclosed balcony of a third-floor apartment in Nicosia, causing extensive damage. Another fire occurred in a prefabricated building in Athienou, spreading to a kitchen and parking area. Lastly, firefighters extinguished a car fire involving a Nissan vehicle on the Paphos-Chada road, which also scorched a nearby patch of dry grass. The cause of each fire is under investigation.
A fire broke out at Akadimias park in Aglandja, Nicosia and was brought under full control at around 11.20am. Only a small area of dry grass was burned. The forestry department deployed seven firefighters and one fire engine, while the Fire Service sent two firefighters and one fire truck. The exact causes of the fire are under investigation.
