Fire crews tackled a busy 24 hours responding to a total of 31 incidents, including 22 fires, according to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis.
Firefighters battled a significant blaze Wednesday afternoon that engulfed the enclosed balcony of a third-floor apartment in Nicosia.
Three fire engines, one equipped with a telescopic arm, were deployed to extinguish the flames that caused extensive damage to the balcony. The apartment was unoccupied at the time. Initial investigations suggest hookah coals left on a flammable mat may have sparked the fire.
Earlier on Wednesday, crews responded to a fire in a prefabricated building located in the Athienou municipality. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus battled the blaze that spread to a nearby kitchen and parking area. Three fire engines were called to the scene, and the fire, believed to have originated from a spark from an electric tool used outdoors, caused significant damage.
Rounding out the busy period, firefighters extinguished a car fire early Friday morning involving a Nissan vehicle abandoned on the Paphos-Chada road. The fire caused significant damage to the car and scorched a small nearby patch of dry grass.
