The Cypriot director’s third feature film “Africa Star” had a successful world premiere at the Sofia Film Festival. The film explores the impact of poverty on three generations of Cypriot women and delves into the idea of how our ancestors’ actions shape our lives. The director emphasizes the importance of cinema in addressing the dark aspects of human existence and societal issues. “Africa Star” will be screened in Nicosia and Limassol as part of the 22nd International Film Days of Cyprus 2024.
The film “The Blue Caftan” by Moroccan director Maryam Touzani will be screened at ARTos House in Nicosia on Sunday, 7 April 2024 at 7 pm. The film tells the story of Halim and Mina who run a caftan store in Morocco’s oldest medina. The screening marks the first collaboration between Cyprus Film Days and Queer Wave, with free admission. The film won the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film at Cannes in 2022 and was Morocco’s official entry for the Oscars.
The 22nd edition of the Cyprus Film Days International Festival will take place from April 12-20, 2024. The festival will feature 11 films in competition sections, with winners selected by a five-member international jury. The jury will present awards such as Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography, among others. The winners will be announced on April 20, 2024, at the Closing and Awards Ceremony. Additionally, the festival will include screenings of films selected by the jury and a special programme called “The Jury Presents.”
The 22nd edition of Cyprus Film Days is set to take place from April 12, featuring a diverse line-up of films that address major social and artistic concerns of our times. The festival will include screenings of internationally acclaimed films such as “The Old Oak,” “Perfect Days,” “Green Border,” “Afire,” and “Do not Expect too Much from the End of the World.” Additionally, the festival will showcase films by Cypriot directors in the Cypriot Films Competition Section, as well as independent micro-budget filmmaking in the Taste of Indie section.
A large carnival parade was held on the central avenue of Pegeia municipality on a Sunday afternoon, featuring the Mayor of Pegeia, Marinos Lambrou, as the Carnival King dressed as an astronaut. The parade included around three thousand participants and 27 groups and chariots, with themes inspired by politics, everyday life, and cinema. The event aimed to provide entertainment for both young and old, offering an escape from daily problems.
The 22nd Cyprus Film Days International Festival, scheduled for April 2024, will feature screenings, masterclasses, workshops, and parallel events aimed at industry professionals, cinephiles, and children. The festival will include AI and Physical Movement in Film Development training sessions, with a workshop on using Artificial Intelligence in film projects and a masterclass on storytelling through physical movement. The AI workshop will be led by Taç Romey and Markus Walsch, supported by CYENS Centre of Excellence, and held at The Studio in Nicosia. The movement masterclass will be led by Marie Scherzer, supported by Dance House Lefkosia, Dance House Lemesos, and Nea Kinisi Cyprus, and hosted at Dance House Lefkosia. The festival will also feature Cinema Talks for film professionals, covering topics like public film funding opportunities in Germany, the Minority Co-Productions Scheme, Creative Europe’s funding programmes, and investment incentives in Cyprus. Additionally, there will be film workshops for children and youth, including a masterclass on Screenlife technique, a collaborative filmmaking workshop for children with autism, a hand-drawn animation workshop, and a Speed Filmmaking workshop. The festival will take place from April 12-20 at the Rialto Theatre in Limassol and Zena Palace in Nicosia.
The ratification of a film co-production agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and Israel is condemned by 100 individuals from the Cypriot film industry. This condemnation was organized by the network Film Workers for Palestine – Cyprus, under the call titled “No to the exploitation of cinema as an alibi for whitewashing the genocide of Palestinians.” The individuals opposing this agreement express their concern over the use of cinema to whitewash the actions of the state of Israel and its government against Palestinians.
A series of free, guided cultural walks is being offered in downtown Nicosia this spring, focusing on the city’s history, iconic buildings, neighborhoods, and heritage. These walks are part of the European HUB-IN project, involving the Municipality of Nicosia and the Cyprus Energy Office. They occur every Saturday, featuring 10 different themes, and will run until the end of June. The walks are primarily in Greek, with some available in English, and cater to various interests, including traditional shops, cultural spaces, historical monuments, and are designed to be inclusive of children and specifically for English speakers. Tours include explorations of Nicosia’s multicultural past and intercultural future, the city’s educational history, the significance of water and wealth, the role of coffee in Cypriot society, the history of royal families, transformations from the Middle Ages to today, the revival of Nicosia’s oldest neighborhood, and the cultural and environmental richness of the walled city. Additionally, there is a walk focusing on the emergence and evolution of Cypriot theatre and cinema.
