Keep your receipts for income tax

Keep your receipts for income tax

Efforts are being made worldwide to reduce tax evasion. In Cyprus, there is a proposal to deduct a percentage of expenses up to €50,000 per year for income tax purposes. This may benefit higher earners more than low-income owners. Failure to provide receipts for expenses contributes to tax evasion. Various sectors, such as healthcare, construction, and real estate, are involved in undeclared payments. The issue extends to the catering and leisure sector, with examples of large amounts of undeclared money being spent. The state loses revenue due to tax evasion, and efforts are being made to encourage card payments to combat this issue.

Paphos Cultural Foundation delayed again

Paphos Cultural Foundation delayed again

The hot potato regarding the Paphos Cultural Foundation has been delayed for three years and is being transferred to the new, more populous Paphos Municipal Council that will emerge from the June elections. The current Municipal Council’s lack of progress on the matter is final, attributed to efforts to divide positions rather than appointing culture-minded individuals. The new council is hoped to have a proper perspective to implement the plan, which aimed to resume cultural activities from where “Paphos 2017” left off. However, recent allegations by the Cultural Movement ex-Artis accuse the Municipality of Paphos of irresponsibility, claiming that artworks placed in the city as part of the Cultural Capital initiative are missing and at risk of being destroyed. Specifically, three sculptures, including works by Rinos Stefani and Herman Pitts, are missing, and the movement calls on the Municipality to locate and reposition them.

The processes for licensing and supervision of credit managers are becoming stricter, with new legislation being introduced to harmonize national law with European directives. Credit managers must be licensed by their member state of origin before starting their activities, meeting specific conditions such as robust governance and protection rules for borrowers. Buyers will not be licensed, except for those managing their own portfolios. Credit buyers will be supervised by the Central Bank and subject to penalties for any violations. Companies in the debt acquisition sector will be automatically recognized as licensed credit managers. The bills also ensure consumer protection, including timely information on credit agreement changes and the right to raise defenses against loan buyers.
