Two different elections will be held simultaneously in Cyprus on June 9, 2024, with voters having to choose between 61 candidates for the European Parliament and 3,232 candidates for various local government positions.

The permanence of appointments to certain positions such as auditor-general, attorney-general, and deputy attorney-general in Cyprus is being questioned. The idea of permanence was to safeguard independence and objectivity, but it could lead to complacency and lack of motivation. It is suggested that non-renewable contracts with an eight-year term would be more suitable to prevent long-term stays in these positions. The constitution may need to be amended to allow for fixed-term contracts instead of permanent appointments.
Animal producers in the occupied north are in the eighth day of their protests, supported by unions, civil society organizations, and political parties. The protests gained momentum despite a government decree postponing a planned strike by the Air Traffic Controllers’ Union. The producers are demanding affordable, domestic meat and criticizing the government for importing frozen meat. Union leaders accused the administration of neglecting the people’s needs and prioritizing special interests. The protesters are calling for the government to resign and are emphasizing the importance of supporting domestic producers and the economy.
There are more than 7,000 candidates running in the upcoming EU and local government elections in Cyprus. Voters will have to choose among 12 political party combinations and independent candidates. The ballot papers are printed in different colors to help voters differentiate between the various elections. Two communities did not have candidates, and others did not meet the required number of candidates for community council members, so a new date will be set for those elections.
Jeremy Corbyn, former leader of Britain’s Labour Party, announced he will run as an independent candidate in the upcoming general election on July 4. Labour suspended Corbyn in 2020 due to handling of anti-Semitism complaints. Despite not being included in the shortlist for candidates for his Islington North seat, Corbyn decided to run independently, stating that members of Islington North Labour were denied the right to choose a candidate.
Akel and Disy were involved in a full day of bickering where they compared each other to Elam. The problem with the far-right is not that it steals votes and party members, but that it is a political power outside of and against democracy. Disy is the political force that pioneered and paved the way for the EU, while Akel was opposed to it then and still is today. Elam suggested that Disy and Akel have the same ideas on the Cyprus problem and together support the LGBTQ agenda.
Attempts have been made by the state to set up university clinics at Nicosia general hospital to be used by the medical school of the University of Cyprus, but have been blocked by the government doctors’ union, Pasyki, who do not want outsiders taking charge of hospital clinics.
