Road fatalities in Cyprus are on the rise in 2024, reversing a two-year downward trend, despite the introduction of traffic cameras and safety campaigns.
Police data shows a 41% increase in road deaths compared to the same period in 2023. There have been 14 fatal collisions resulting in 17 deaths this year, compared to 12 collisions and 12 deaths last year.
A notable shift is that most fatalities are occurring within urban areas, unlike the European trend where motorways pose a higher risk. Authorities attribute this to the continued practice of using mobile phones while driving.
“Careless and inattentive driving, mainly due to mobile phone use,” is the primary cause of this year’s fatalities, according to Traffic Officer Charis Evripidou. He emphasised that despite widespread camera enforcement, drivers persist in this dangerous habit.
However, there are some positive signs. Alcohol-related deaths are down, and drivers generally show more caution in cities due to the camera system. Complaints about speeding and inattention are the main issues within urban areas.
Pedestrians and foreign nationals are disproportionately affected by the rise in accidents.
Limassol has the highest number of fatalities (6) this year, followed by Nicosia (6). Paphos is the only district without any deaths.car accidents. road fatalities, traffic cameras, mobile phone use
