Police are investigating a new online scam after a 56-year-old filed a complaint. The complainant was convinced by unknown persons to use various websites for buying and selling products, eventually leading her to create an account on a cryptocurrency site. She ended up purchasing products with cryptocurrencies in hopes of making a profit on commission, losing approximately 19 thousand euros in the process.
A 60-year-old resident of Limassol lost €55,000 in an online scam where he was persuaded to send money to a woman claiming to need it for a relative’s medical treatment. The victim made 14 separate transactions totaling €55,450 based on messages received through a messaging app. The incident occurred between 2020 and 2021 and is currently under investigation by the police.
A company in Limassol was scammed out of over €16,000 in an online scam. The company received an email from a supposed supplier requesting an advance payment to a different bank account. The company made the payment but later discovered that unknown individuals had gained access to the supplier’s email. The Limassol CID is investigating the case, but no culprits have been identified yet. The police reminded the public about the risks of online transactions and advised verifying communication with sellers through previously established phone numbers.
