New costumes in revamped torch lighting ceremony for Paris
– The Paris 2024 Olympics flame lighting ceremony will take place next month in ancient Olympia, featuring a new high priestess, redesigned costumes, and fresh music as part of Greece’s efforts to revamp the ceremony.
– Actress Mary Mina will play the high priestess for the first time, using a parabolic mirror and the sun’s rays to ignite the torch on April 16.
– The costumes for Mina and her priestesses will be two-toned — black and white, differing from the traditional monochromatic white or light blue costumes.
– Olympic rowing champion Stefanos Douskos will be the first torchbearer, starting an 11-day Greek relay.
– The flame will be handed over to Paris Games organizers in Athens on April 26 and will arrive in Marseille on May 8, with up to 150,000 people expected to attend the ceremony at the Old Port.
– The French torch relay will last 68 days, culminating in the lighting of the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony on July 26.
