Google limits results from new AI search tool after viral inaccuracies

Google announced restrictions on its new AI search tool, AI Overviews, after it produced inaccurate and bizarre responses. The tool advised people to eat rocks and spread false information about Barack Obama. Google’s head of search, Liz Reid, acknowledged the failures and implemented protective measures like limiting user-generated content and temporarily halting AI responses on certain topics like health. Despite challenges, Reid defended the tool, but cautioned users to independently verify results due to the risk of misinformation. The rollout of AI Overviews sparked reactions as it replaced traditional search result links, leading to concerns over the spread of inaccurate advice on social media. Google urged users to independently verify information and attributed peculiar results to a “data void” where reliable information is scarce. Despite setbacks, Google remains committed to improving its AI tools and enhancing user experience while safeguarding against misinformation.

Former Cypriot passport-holder Deripaska calls latest US sanctions ‘balderdash’

Oleg Deripaska dismissed the latest U.S. sanctions on companies connected to a scheme as nonsense. The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Russian companies disguising ownership of a .6 billion industrial stake controlled by Deripaska, leading to Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank International dropping a planned purchase. Deripaska, previously sanctioned by Britain and the U.S., has challenged the sanctions, calling them groundless and absurd. He was also stripped of his Cypriot citizenship after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and added to the E.U.’s sanctions list in April 2022.

An order was issued by the District Court of Larnaca to freeze six plots of land, which were unlawfully transferred from deceased Turkish Cypriots to natural and legal persons. The freezing order represents a significant step in the ongoing investigation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Larnaca. The case involves alleged falsification of documents by a group of Greek Cypriots to appropriate the frozen property, with potential involvement of officials from the Larnaca Land Registry. The investigation also looks into the role of a former lawyer who has been removed from the Pan-Cypriot Bar Association register. The alleged crimes took place in February and were discovered when an individual tried to secure a payment certificate from the community authority of Pyrga. The police are currently investigating the case.
