The submission process for candidate nominations in district administrations and municipalities in Larnaca was completed on Wednesday. People in Larnaca are voting in June to elect district governors, mayors, deputy mayors, municipal councillors, and members of school boards. Angelos Hadjicharalambous and Evangelos Evangelides submitted their candidacies for the role of district governor.
Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou stated that local government reform in Cyprus is “on the right track.” He believes that most teething problems will be resolved by the end of June. Progress is going well regarding staffing and finding buildings for various authorities. There may be an adjustment period at the beginning of the transition. Complaints will be made to the police if any objectionable issues arise regarding voter registration. More than 3,500 objections have been submitted for June’s elections, with some voters registering themselves at unusual addresses.
District Administrations were open until 2 pm on Saturday to facilitate registration on the electoral rolls. 2,109 applications were submitted for registration or transfer of electoral rights. The last day for registration is April 2nd, and young people turning 18 by June 9, 2024, can also register. Applications can be submitted electronically or in person at various locations. On April 2nd, all offices will be open until 5 pm, and electronic submissions can be made until midnight.
