In 2022, the number of landlines in Cyprus decreased by 27,474, a decline of close to 10%, while the number of mobile phones increased by 4.4%, with 17,647 new users, bringing the total to 1.43 million devices. This increase in mobile phones has led to a market penetration rate of 156%, indicating there are more mobile phones than people in Cyprus. The telecommunications company Cyta holds the majority share of the landline market at over 56%, though this has decreased from 62.7% in 2020. Cablenet is the biggest competitor, holding 23.8% of the market. In the mobile market, Cyta also leads with a 51.8% share, followed by Epic at 23.9%, and Cablenet, which has risen to 10.1%. The number of fixed broadband subscribers increased by 2.2% in 2022, adding 7,676 new subscribers. Contracts with unlimited data, voice calls, and SMS account for 53.77% of mobile subscriptions.

A ruling by Judge Timothy Fancourt allowed Harry’s claims of unlawful information gathering to proceed to trial, but dismissed allegations of old mobile phone hacking for being filed too late. Harry’s lawyers aim to amend his lawsuit to include new allegations, such as the Sun targeting his then-girlfriend Meghan in 2016 and widespread bugging of his calls. The claim also involves allegations about Princess Diana’s surveillance and call interception by NGN, known to its editors and senior executives. NGN has objected to these new allegations, citing various reasons including lateness and lack of evidence. In 2011, NGN apologized for phone-hacking by News of the World journalists and settled over 1,300 claims, but denies wrongdoing by Sun staff. Harry’s lawyers have accused Murdoch and senior executives of covering up wrongdoing and giving false evidence. NGN argues some claimants are attacking the tabloid press, and denies allegations against its staff. Since moving to California in 2020, Harry has focused on battling the British press for intruding into his private life. In December, he won a lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspaper for phone-hacking and unlawful activities.

Serif Avcil, the bodyguard of Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, claimed he lost his phone on the way to the police station, according to police sergeant Bilger Koral. Avcil was arrested and had his second court hearing where it was revealed he registered for a master’s degree at Cyprus Health and Social Sciences University on June 5 last year, but the university’s records showed his enrollment date as February 2, 2022. Fake course grades were entered for Avcil, allowing him to graduate top of his class on June 19. He also claimed to not know where his diploma certificate was. Avcil was given a further six-day remand for not assisting the police by hiding evidence. Dervish Refikler, general secretary of the north’s higher education accreditation authority, was also in court for taking bribes related to the accreditation of KSTU’s medical school. Items including laptops and a diploma were seized from Refikler’s house, and he too was given a further six-day remand.

A 40-year-old resident of Limassol was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a child pornography case. The electronic crime unit of the police discovered the suspect’s alleged involvement in exchanging messages containing pictures and videos of minors and participation in groups trafficking child pornography. The arrest was made on a Friday afternoon after obtaining a warrant, based on testimony against the suspect. Police seized a tablet and mobile phone during investigations at his home.
