The request of the Larnaca Municipality and TEPAK (Technological University of Cyprus) for the establishment of a School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development seems to be on a very promising path.
As announced by the Rector of TEPAK, Panagiotis Zafeiris, the Ministry of Finance has positively evaluated the study submitted by the Technological University last January. “We are proceeding immediately with the establishment of an International Advisory Committee, which in collaboration with the Larnaca Municipality will finalize the architectural plans for the School and complete the drafting of its study programmes,” Mr. Zafeiris stated, noting that the details will be submitted to the Ministry of Finance to assist in the state’s final decisions.
Plans for the architectural development of the school, he added, “will also take into account the plans for the building development of the CMMI Excellence Centre.” A meeting between officials of TEPAK and the Mayor of Larnaca is scheduled for next week to discuss the next steps.
Information from philenews suggests that the school will be proposed to be located in Mackenzie, where the CMMI buildings were to be constructed, having already secured the necessary permits. What remains now is to submit the clarifications requested by the Ministry of Finance and to make a decision by the Council of Ministers, given that the President of the Republic has publicly committed to the establishment of the school in Larnaca.
