Cyprus approves school CCTV system after privacy review

The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has received approval to install a Closed-Circuit Video Surveillance System (CCVSS) in schools, following a successful consultation process with the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, a statement from the Commissioner’s office said on Tuesday.
The Commissioner’s office reviewed an impact assessment submitted by the Ministry outlining the operation of the CCTV system. The assessment stated that cameras would be installed at entrances, exits, and perimeters of schools, with recording restricted to school grounds and excluding private or public areas.
The system would operate outside school hours, with footage stored for 72 hours and access strictly limited. Warning signs will be placed to inform the public.
“Following confirmation of the adoption of our final comments and suggestions, we have deemed the impact assessment compliant with Article 35 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR),” the statement said.
The approval allows the Ministry to proceed with the planned implementation, with a pilot programme in ten schools initially.Closed-Circuit Video Surveillance System. Closed-Circuit Video Surveillance System, Ministry of Education, impact assessment
