Chatfield couple faces multiple counts of felony tax evasion

CHATFIELD — A Chatfield couple is facing multiple counts of failing to file income tax returns, both personal returns and returns for a business. The Ramsey County Attorney’s Office has filed six felony counts each against Jeffrey Paul O’Connor and Trista Jean O’Connor, both of Chatfield, for failing to file individual income tax returns. Jeffrey O’Connor was also charged with six felony counts of failing to file corporate income tax returns.Court documents allege the O’Connors did not file individual income tax returns for the tax years 2017 through 2022, the Minnesota Department of Revenue said in a news release. The complaint alleges that the couple did earn enough income to be required to file tax returns in Minnesota. The complaints also state that Jeffrey O’Connor did not file corporate income tax returns for his business, Twin City Trimmers LLC, for those same years. Jeffrey O’Connor did file a return for the business for tax year 2016, according to the complaints, indicating that he was aware of his business tax obligations.

According to the complaints, the couple allegedly failed to pay more than $470,000 in income and corporate tax, penalties, and interest.Each tax-related felony charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
