History was made in Spain by the election of Mar Galtheran to the local parliament of Valencia
The 45-year-old Spaniard Mar Galtheran became the first person with down syndrome to be elected to a local parliament and gain the status of a member of parliament.
"Society is starting to notice that people with Down syndrome have a lot to offer to society. But the road is still long," Galtheran emphasized in her statements to the Guardian.
The MP became politicized very early, already at the age of 18, when she joined the ranks of the People's Party of Spain. She slowly but surely climbed the party hierarchy and became a candidate for parliament last May.
Her election was without a doubt a conquest.
"Society is starting to notice that people with Down syndrome have a lot to offer to society. But the road is still long. Some people did not take well the fact that I am now a member of parliament but ok, on social media there are all the reactions. I just want to offer the citizens of Valencia and that's what I'll try to do," he said.
