David Beckham has been made an ambassador for the King’s Foundation after meeting King Charles III at his Highgrove home in Gloucestershire, where the former England football captain said they swapped “beekeeping tips”.
Beckham, 48, discussed the charitable foundation’s work with the monarch during the recent visit and said he was “excited” to take on the new role helping to promote its education programmes and efforts to give young people greater access to nature.
“I’m particularly looking forward to supporting the foundation’s education programmes and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature,” the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder said.
Beckham, who has four children with wife Victoria, former singer with the Spice Girls pop group, said he has long been keen to help youths “expand their horizons”.
“Having developed a love for the countryside I’m also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the foundation’s work,” he added.
The appointment comes after Beckham developed an interest in beekeeping, as shown in a recent Netflix documentary about him where he tended to hives in a beekeeper’s outfit. He has also posted beekeeping videos on Instagram.
“It was inspiring to hear from the King about the work of His Majesty’s foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens – and compare beekeeping tips!” Beckham said.
The King’s Foundation, formerly the Prince’s Foundation, promotes education, revitalises communities through urban regeneration schemes, and supports sustainability initiatives. It was founded by the King when he held the title Prince of Wales.
King Charles, 74, returned to public duties in April after receiving treatment for cancer earlier this year.
