A Palestinian militant was killed and eight other people were wounded on Friday in an Israeli airstrike on the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry and the Israel Defense Forces said.
The armed section of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group said the militant who died was a member of the group and was named Islam Hamaisa.
According to the Palestinian Authority’s Ministry of Health, the eight wounded were evacuated and are being treated in stable condition in hospitals.
The Israeli armed forces said the raid was carried out by a fighter jet and a helicopter. It was a rare operation of this kind in the occupied West Bank, where violence had already escalated well before the Israeli/Hamas war broke out in the Gaza Strip on 7 October.
The Israeli army said that the raid targeted a building allegedly used as an operations center and confirmed the death of Islam Hamaisha, whom it blamed for a series of attacks against Israelis.
The operation was conducted “to eliminate an immediate threat”, the Israeli army added, without going into details about the specific “threat.”
