The Paphos Municipality on Tuesday addressed criticism circulating on social media concerning the lack of bus stop shelters.
The controversy arose from a photo depicting two women sitting at an unsheltered bus stop on the city’s Ellados Avenue.
In a statement, the Municipality identified the women as residents who “have chosen to live a peculiar lifestyle without electricity and basic amenities.”
“We condemn attempts to exploit these individuals to create misleading and deliberate impressions against the Municipality, with the obvious intention of discrediting the work accomplished in the last decade,” the statement declared.
The Municipality also sought to clarify the division of responsibilities. “The installation of new bus stop shelters in the cities of Paphos and Geroskipou, as well as other cities, is undertaken by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works,” it said.
“As part of this project, shelters and infrastructure will be constructed for approximately 200 bus stops in Paphos and Geroskipou, out of which only about 50 will have a shelter, as per the design,” it clarified.
