{"id":9899,"date":"2024-04-28T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2024-04-28T05:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9899"},"modified":"2024-04-28T08:00:18","modified_gmt":"2024-04-28T05:00:18","slug":"microsoft-s-and-amazons-ai-partnerships-draw-uk-watchdog-scrutiny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9899","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft, \u2019s and Amazon\u2019s AI partnerships draw UK watchdog scrutiny"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/microsoft-s-and-amazons-ai-partnerships-draw-uk-watchdog-scrutiny.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Britain\u2019s competition watchdog said this week that it was seeking comments on the AI partnerships between Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Mistral AI, as well as between Amazon (AMZN.O) and Anthropic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1766269309\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1220770116\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-2274396678933-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Competition and Markets Authority also said it wanted to hear the views of third parties on Microsoft\u2019s hiring of former employees of Inflection AI and related arrangements.<br \/>\nMicrosoft last month appointed DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman as the head of a newly created consumer AI unit and hired several employees of his Inflection AI startup.<br \/>\nThe regulator said it had not formed any conclusions on whether the deals fell within UK merger rules or raised competition concerns.<br \/>\nMicrosoft said it was confident that \u201ccommon business practices such as the hiring of talent or making a fractional \u202finvestment in an AI \u202fstart-up\u202f promote competition and are \u202fnot the same as\u202f a merger\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cWe will provide the UK Competition and Markets Authority with the information it needs to complete its inquiries expeditiously,\u201d a spokesperson said.<br \/>\nAmazon said it was \u201cunprecedented for the CMA to review a collaboration of this type\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cUnlike partnerships between other AI startups and large technology companies, our collaboration with Anthropic includes a limited investment, doesn\u2019t give Amazon a board director or observer role, and continues to have Anthropic running its models on multiple cloud providers,\u201d a spokesperson said.<br \/>\nThe CMA is already looking into Microsoft\u2019s partnership with Open AI and asked for views in December.<br \/>\n\u201cThe CMA is also considering feedback received earlier this year on Microsoft\u2019s partnership with OpenAI and is currently waiting for information it has requested from the firms,\u201d it said on Wednesday.<br \/>\nIt said the move to examine the Microsoft-Mistral AI and Amazon-Anthropic partnerships comes after it identified \u201can interconnected web\u201d of over 90 partnerships and strategic investments involving the same companies in a recent report on AI Foundation Models.<br \/>\nThe US Federal Trade Commission in January had ordered OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet (GOOGL.O), Amazon and Anthropic to provide information on recent investments and partnerships involving generative AI companies and cloud service providers.<br \/>\nThe CMA is inviting views by May 9.
