{"id":9783,"date":"2024-04-26T20:00:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T17:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9783"},"modified":"2024-04-26T20:00:39","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T17:00:39","slug":"african-dust-engulfs-athens-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9783","title":{"rendered":"African dust engulfs Athens [VIDEO]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An impressive timelapse video has been released by meteo.gr\/National Observatory of Athens regarding the African dust that \u201cchoked\u201d Athens on the 23rd and 24th of April.<br \/>\nAs seen in the footage captured by the observatory\u2019s cameras in Penteli, the dust from the Sahara, also known as \u201cMinerva Red,\u201d turned the landscape orange within a few hours and made the atmosphere stifling.<br \/>\n\u201cA new episode, possibly even more intense, may occur until mid-May.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n[embedded content]<br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Professor of Environmental Engineering at AUTh, Dimosthenis Sarigiannis, discussed the phenomenon in a recent interview, sounding the alarm and estimating that we may encounter it more frequently.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have encountered African dust perhaps 15 years ago,\u201d he emphasized, noting that \u201cwe will now have a higher frequency of such events and earlier in the summer season.\u201d<br \/>\nAccording to the professor, the phenomenon \u201cis characteristic of drought and relative desertification of soils, resulting in a much greater volume of particles,\u201d and he noted that \u201cwind patterns change as the climate changes. This affects even more in relation to African dust.\u201d<br \/>\nHe further estimated that a similar or even more intense episode of African dust is expected in May. \u201cWe expect to see at least one more new episode with African dust until mid-May, which could be of the same intensity as the current one, perhaps even more depending on the prevailing climatic conditions,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHowever, as he said, \u201cthings will be much better from May onwards,\u201d with a new episode expected in the fall.<br \/>\n<strong>What causes concern<\/strong><br \/>\nSarigiannis emphasized the increased frequency of appearance of African dust as well as the duration of the episode and the volume of particles and stressed \u201cthis is a new element and has to do with climate change.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe worrying thing,\u201d he said, \u201cis that this burden adds to the particle pollution we already have in the major urban centers of Greece, in Athens, Thessaloniki, Volos, for example, where air quality, objectively speaking, is not very good in relation to particles.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe need to adapt to what it means, which means that the National Health System should be ready to deal with acute cases of people who will have problems,\u201d he added.<br \/>\nHe concluded by saying that \u201cwe have to take both adaptation actions, so that we are ready to deal with such acute episodes, and on the other hand, to do real preventive work, reducing the level of pollution from particles in our cities, so that when a wave from Africa comes on some days, it does not come to settle on an already high background of atmospheric pollution.\u201dAfrican dust.
