{"id":9691,"date":"2024-04-26T09:00:12","date_gmt":"2024-04-26T06:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9691"},"modified":"2024-04-26T09:00:12","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T06:00:12","slug":"trial-over-hotel-collapse-which-killed-35-cypriots-resumes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9691","title":{"rendered":"Trial over hotel collapse which killed 35 Cypriots resumes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/trial-over-hotel-collapse-which-killed-35-cypriots-resumes.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The trial of the 11 people who are held responsible for the deaths of 24 Cypriot children and 11 of their teachers and coaches when the hotel in which they were staying collapsed <strong>is to resume on Friday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1550874352\">\n<div id=\"cypru-786306295\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-3529749292922-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Isias hotel in the Turkish city of Adiyaman collapsed on February 6 last year during the earthquakes which hit the region, killing the 35 Cypriots and 47 others.<br \/>\nThe Cypriots made up the Famagusta Turk Maarif Koleji (TMK) school volleyball team and were in Adiyaman for a tournament. Following their deaths, the team received the nickname \u201cchampion angels\u201d.<br \/>\nA total of 11 people stand accused of \u201ccausing death by conscious negligence\u201d at Adiyaman\u2019s third High criminal court, and, if found guilty<strong>, could face a maximum of 22 and a half years in prison<\/strong> <strong>each<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAll 11 defendants, including the hotel\u2019s owner Ahmet Bozkurt and his two sons Mehmet Fatih Bozkurt and Efe Bozkurt, denied all wrongdoing when the court most recently convened in January.<br \/>\nDefendants Efe Bozkurt and Halil Bagci had been held in custody following the first phase of the trial but were subsequently released following the publishing of a report into the hotel\u2019s collapse by Ankara\u2019s Gazi University.<br \/>\nThe report generated controversy as it had been much less scathing than other reports released by Trabzon\u2019s Karadeniz Technical University and the Istanbul Technical University.<br \/>\nMurat Aktugrali, whose son Aras was among those killed, described the Gazi University report as \u201c<strong>very incomplete and technically unequipped<\/strong>\u201d, and said that families of those killed would now demand a new technical report be commissioned.<br \/>\nHe added that the investigation into the case \u201cshould be expanded\u201d, and that \u201cstate officials should be included in the case file\u201d.<br \/>\nThe trial is set to begin at 9am.<br \/>\nThe trial is being attended by the families of the 24 children, who will be joined in the court\u2019s viewing gallery by high-profile Turkish Cypriot figures including the north\u2019s \u2018prime minister\u2019 Unal Ustel, \u2018education minister\u2019 Nazim Cavusoglu, Cyprus Turkish bar association chairman Hasan Esendagli, and other \u2018ministers\u2019 and \u2018MPs\u2019.<br \/>\nSpeaking ahead of the trial on Thursday evening, Rusen Yucesoylu Karakaya, whose daughter Selin was among those killed, said, \u201cwe will defend our case as always\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cComing to Adiyaman was difficult, but we will overcome it. <strong>Neither fatigue nor pain will deter us. Tomorrow, we will show the criminals all the facts<\/strong> and they will regret it. Science will prevail,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nShe added that the Isias case will \u201cset a precedent\u201d, and that \u201cour fight is for the champion angels as well as everyone who lost their lives in the earthquakes.\u201d<br \/>\nMeanwhile, Adiyaman mayor Abdurrahman Tutdere told news website Kibrisli Gazete that \u201c<strong>the pain in this city is still fresh and consciences are continuing to bleed<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nTutdere, who belongs to opposition party the CHP, was elected to office in Turkey\u2019s historic local elections last month, and said \u201cour people gave us a new duty after March 31\u201d.<br \/>\nHe said his municipality has begun working to make changes to planning laws to protect against future earthquakes, and that he is in contact with the Turkish parliament on the matter.<br \/>\n\u201cContinuing the system with the current pre-earthquake regulations without changing the laws <strong>will leave us unprepared for future natural disasters<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe added that the \u201cnecessary legal studies\u201d must be carried out, and that the Turkish parliament must implement their findings.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trial of 11 people responsible for the deaths of 24 Cypriot children and 11 teachers and coaches in a hotel collapse in Turkey is set to resume on Friday.
