class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Wednesday marked <strong>exactly 20 years since a referendum was held on whether to reunite Cyprus under the Annan plan on April 24, 2004<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1878499352\">\n<div id=\"cypru-78842311\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-5292537397199-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While the majority \u2013 65 per cent \u2013 of Turkish Cypriots voted in favour of the plan, an even larger majority \u2013 76 per cent \u2013 of Greek Cypriots voted against it, and thus the plan was never implemented, and Cyprus remains divided to this day.<br \/>\nReaction to the referendum\u2019s failure was mixed at time, with then-President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash both having agreed that its rejection was in their interests.<br \/>\nPapadopoulos insisted at the time that the Greek Cypriot electorate \u201care not turning their backs on their Turkish Cypriot compatriots\u201d, but had \u201c<strong>simply rejected this particular solution on offer<\/strong>\u201d.<br \/>\nDenktash resisted calls for his immediate resignation, but announced in May 2004 that he would not be standing for re-election in the following year\u2019s Turkish Cypriot leadership elections.<br \/>\nGuarantor powers the United Kingdom and Turkey both expressed their disappointment at the result, while the Greek government said efforts to reunite the island \u201cshould not be halted\u201d.<br \/>\nThe United Nations were less than impressed at the referendum result, with then-Secretary-General Kofi Annan, after whom the plan was named, saying \u201c<strong>a unique and historic chance to resolve the Cyprus problem has been missed<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nSpecial envoy in Cyprus Alvaro de Soto said, \u201cthis evening, I\u2019m biting my tongue.\u201d<br \/>\nThen European Commissioner for enlargement Gunter Verheugen went further, saying, \u201cI feel cheated by the Greek Cypriot government \u2026 There is a shadow now over the accession of Cyprus.\u201d The Greek Cypriots still entered the EU on May 1, 2004.<br \/>\nIncumbent President Nikos Christodoulides has made no statement to mark the referendum\u2019s anniversary, but incumbent Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar said \u201cnot a single promise\u201d given to the Turkish Cypriots in the aftermath of the referendum has been fulfilled.<br \/>\n\u201cThe Turkish Cypriot people are still being punished with cruel, unfair, and inhumane embargoes,\u201d he said, adding that <strong>the current status quo \u201cencourages the Greek Cypriot side\u2019s uncompromising attitude.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nTassos Papadopoulos\u2019 son and current Diko leader Nicholas Papadopoulos said the Annan plan\u2019s implementation would have led to Cyprus becoming a \u201cprotectorate\u201d, but that \u201cfortunately, our people overwhelmingly rejected it \u2026 defending, justice, dignity, and our
