{"id":9375,"date":"2024-04-23T20:00:17","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T17:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9375"},"modified":"2024-04-23T20:00:17","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T17:00:17","slug":"widespread-impunity-in-the-north-us-human-rights-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9375","title":{"rendered":"Widespread impunity in the north , \u2013 US human rights report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/widespread-impunity-in-the-north-us-human-rights-report.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The 2023 US country report on human rights in Cyprus raised serious concerns over media freedom and <strong>life-threatening conditions in prison<\/strong> in the north.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-606633057\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1063642021\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6585288594030-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Published on Tuesday, it highlighted that \u2018authorities\u2019 in the north took \u201climited credible steps to identify and punish officials who may have committed human rights abuses.<br \/>\n\u201cThere was evidence, however, of widespread impunity.\u201d<br \/>\nSerious \u2018government\u2019 corruption and human trafficking as well as violence against minority groups were highlighted amid by the report. Similarly to the Republic, it specified no significant changes in the human rights situation.<br \/>\n\u201cObservers generally perceived corruption, cronyism and lack of transparency to be serious problems in the \u2018legislative\u2019 and \u2018executive\u2019 branches.\u201d<br \/>\nThe report detailed a survey citing corruption as the biggest problem within the Turkish Cypriot community and noting complaints of <strong>unfairness, partisanship, corruption, and bribery.<\/strong><br \/>\nThe report also outlined that Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar filed a libel lawsuit against journalist Serhat Incirli for allegedly insulting Tatar in 2022 in articles in Yeniduzen.<br \/>\nAdditionally, Turkish Cypriot journalist Ali Kismir is also facing 10 years in prison for \u201chumiliating the Turkish military\u201d the report said.<br \/>\n\u201cIn the area administered by Turkish Cypriots, it was a criminal offence to insult the Turkish Cypriot \u2018government\u2019 and \u2018officials,\u2019 as well as the Turkish government and its officials.\u201d<br \/>\nOn the treatment of migrants, the report flagged \u201c<strong>refoulement of refugees<\/strong> or asylum seekers to a country where they would face torture or persecution.\u201d<br \/>\nNGOs reported refugees faced racism, exploitation, and impediments to achieving self-sufficiency and integration within society. According to an NGO, there were long detention periods for asylum seekers pending deportation or prosecution.<br \/>\nSyrians arriving irregularly were detained an average of 31 days prior to deportation. Syrians smuggled into the north were, however, detained as long as six months in crude jails below \u2018police\u2019 stations.<br \/>\nThe report said foreign domestic workers and international students faced discrimination and, at times, violence.<br \/>\nThere was <strong>discrimination against Maronites<\/strong>, who maintained possession of property in the north but were unable to bequeath the property to heirs residing in the ROC.<br \/>\nThere were also reports of discrimination against LGBTQI+ persons in employment, housing, and access to education or health care. Community members noted an overwhelming majority of LGBTQI+ persons concealed their sexual orientation or gender identity <strong>to avoid potential
