{"id":9339,"date":"2024-04-23T15:00:42","date_gmt":"2024-04-23T12:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9339"},"modified":"2024-04-23T15:00:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T12:00:42","slug":"aboriginal-spears-snatched-by-british-in-1770-to-return-to-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9339","title":{"rendered":"Aboriginal spears snatched by British in 1770 to return to Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/aboriginal-spears-snatched-by-british-in-1770-to-return-to-australia.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Four spears taken from\u00a0Australia\u00a0by a British explorer more than 250 years ago will be returned by Cambridge University to descendants of the indigenous community which crafted them, in the latest high-profile repatriation of artefacts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1162757752\">\n<div id=\"cypru-977728797\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-7507827788007-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The four spears are all that remains of the 40 or so which James Cook and his team took from the Gweagal people on their arrival in\u00a0Australia\u00a0in 1770, when they became the first known Europeans to reach the country\u2019s east coast.<br \/>\nIndigenous people from across the globe have battled for years to recover works pillaged by explorers and colonisers, and they are finally receiving some of the treasures back at a time when Western institutions are grappling with the cultural legacies of empire.<br \/>\nBenin Bronzes have been returned to Nigeria by Germany and British organisations, while the Netherlands has handed back precious stones, silver and gold jewellery to its former Asian colonies, Sri Lanka and Bali.<br \/>\nThe Gweagal people\u2019s multi-pronged wooden spears have been part of the University of Cambridge\u2019s collection since 1771, when they were presented to Trinity College, where they will be returned in a ceremony on Tuesday.<br \/>\nIt comes seven years after an initial request was refused, partly over concerns about housing and conserving the spears.<br \/>\n\u201cOur Elders have worked for many years to see their ownership transferred to the traditional owners of Botany Bay,\u201d Noeleen Timbery from the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council said in a statement.<br \/>\n\u201cThey (the spears) are an important connection to our past, our traditions, and cultural practices, and to our ancestors.\u201d<br \/>\nDespite momentum swinging in favour of repatriating objects in recent years, some campaigns continue to meet resistance, most famously Greece\u2019s bid for the Parthenon sculptures.<br \/>\nAthens has long called on the British Museum to permanently return the 2,500-year-old sculptures that British diplomat Lord Elgin removed from the Parthenon temple in 1806. The museum has said it would consider a loan to Greece only if Athens acknowledges the museum\u2019s ownership of the sculptures.<br \/>\nWhile resolution seems some way off in the Parthenon case, Cambridge could return further items. Trinity College said it was committed to reviewing the complex legacies of the British empire, particularly in its collections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four spears taken
