The north\u2019s \u2018prime minister\u2019 Unal Ustel said on Monday that Turkey is \u201cunder no obligation to respond\u201d to the north\u2019s authorities<\/strong> over the matter of Cypriots being refused entry into Turkey.<\/p>\n

Speaking in \u2018parliament\u2019, he refuted claims that his \u2018government\u2019 had been \u201cinsensitive\u201d to the matter but said \u201cit is an internal issue of another country\u201d.
\nHe then produced a letter penned to the Turkish Embassy in Nicosia on the matter, which had been sent last November.
\nOpposition party CTP \u2018MP\u2019 Sami Ozuslu then interjected, asking \u201cand they haven\u2019t responded for four months?<\/strong>\u201d before Ustel said Turkey is \u201cunder no obligation to respond.\u201d
\n\u2018Transport minister\u2019 Erhan Arikli also spoke in \u2018parliament\u2019 on the matter, saying \u201cthere are also people who are not allowed into the TRNC. That is the right a state has.\u201d
\nUstel\u2019s remarks are the first such statement made on the matter by Turkish Cypriot officials since \u2018interior minister\u2019 Dursun Oguz announced on April 15 that the north had \u201crequested information\u201d on the matter from Turkey<\/strong>.
\n\u201cIt is not right for people to not know whether they will be allowed in when they arrive at the gate. The necessary explanation will be made,\u201d he had said, adding that \u201cjustifications\u201d have been requested from Turkey.
\nQuestions had also been asked by opposition leaders, with CTP leader Tufan Erhurman asking in \u2018parliament\u2019 on the same day, \u201cwho in this country can enter Turkey and who cannot? Why were some people not allowed? No one in the country knows the answers to these questions<\/strong>.\u201d
\n\u201cI am just asking this; do relations with Turkey match your \u2018good relations\u2019 approach, as you call it? I really hope that not even one person in this chamber will label this state of affairs as \u2018appropriate,\u201d he added.
\nThe matter of Cypriots being refused entry to Turkey reached the top of the north\u2019s political agenda last week when Evrim Hincal, the financial secretary of opposition party the TDP, was refused entry to the country.
\nHincal had travelled to the country alongside Turkish Cypriot Nicosia Mayor Mehmet Harmanci for a joint family holiday, but upon arrival at Istanbul\u2019s Sabiha Gokcen airport, he was told he would not be able to enter the country as his name is on Turkey\u2019s N-82 list<\/strong>.
\nWhile being named on the N-82 list does not mean a person is outright banned from Turkey, those on the list must apply in advance to the Turkish embassy in their country for pre-clearance to enter the country, and the list is not publicly available, so those on it generally do not find out until they arrive in Turkey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
