{"id":9238,"date":"2024-04-22T22:00:40","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T19:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9238"},"modified":"2024-04-22T22:00:40","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T19:00:40","slug":"earlier-teaching-of-sex-ed-could-have-saved-many-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=9238","title":{"rendered":"Earlier teaching of sex ed , \u2018could have saved many children\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/earlier-teaching-of-sex-ed-could-have-saved-many-children.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>An earlier introduction of sex education in Cyprus\u2019 schools <strong>\u201cwould have saved many children\u201d from abuse<\/strong>, Volt MP Alexandra Attalides said on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-641761364\">\n<div id=\"cypru-49087275\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-8667914378360-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Speaking at a House human rights committee meeting, she said research into the matter had identified the need for sex education to be taught to children in Cyprus as early as 1976.<br \/>\nIn this regard, she pointed out that studies carried out across Europe show that sex education \u201cprotects children from abusers\u201d.<br \/>\nShe said that over 400 complaints are filed to the Children\u2019s House regarding sexual abuse of minors every year and that data from Europe suggests that only a third of incidences of sexual abuse are reported, <strong>she estimates that over 1,000 children in Cyprus are victims of sexual abuse every year<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHowever, the introduction of sex education into Cyprus\u2019 schools was delayed for almost five decades. For this, Attalides blamed what she described as \u201cthe state allowing speakers to misinform and terrorise society on an issue which has been resolved abroad.\u201d<br \/>\nThe teaching of sex education classes in Cypriot public schools was only approved by cabinet in January last year.<br \/>\nAttalides said the matter of sex education had been subjected to \u201c<strong>an orgy of misinformation and targeting<\/strong>\u201d and called on Education Minister Athena Michaelidou to \u201ccome forward\u201d and defend the practice.<br \/>\nMichaelidou said she was \u201csatisfied\u201d with the teaching of sex education in schools and also said the number of cases reaching the police and the Children\u2019s House \u201cmean that children are breaking their silence\u201d.<br \/>\nShe also said she had personally borne witness to a child coming forward to report that they had been the victim of sexual abuse while she was in a kindergarten.<br \/>\nShe added that sex education at present \u201caims to protect children from sexual abuse, to help them break their silence, to help them maintain sexual hygiene and protect themselves.\u201d<br \/>\nThe incidents of children reporting sexual abuse, she said, \u201c<strong>are ringing alarm bells, but showing that our protocols and procedures are working<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nIn addition, she said, there is no chance whatsoever of children being allowed to be excluded from sex education classes, despite some parents wishing for their children to not be present.<br \/>\nOther MPs present at the meeting were largely satisfied with the government\u2019s direction of travel on the matter of sex education, though committee chairwoman and Akel MP Irene Charalambidou was keen to condemn \u201cactors inside and outside of parliament\u201d who had disseminated disinformation on the matter.<br \/>\nDisy MP Fotini Tsiridou said the government is \u201cheading in the right direction\u201d on the matter, while fellow Disy MP Rita Superman congratulated Michaelidou for her work, with Diko MP Christos Senekis and Green MP Charalambos Theopemptou also expressed his
