President Nikos Christodoulides on Monday evening touted forthcoming \u201cdaring reforms\u201d in Cyprus\u2019 health sector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He was speaking at an event organised by the Cyprus patients\u2019 associations federation (Osak) to mark European patients\u2019 rights day, and said the reforms are \u201cexpected soon\u201d with a number of pieces of legislation in the pipeline.
\nOne such reform will be the creation of an ombudsman for the health centre, which he said will be implemented within the year.
\nThe ombudsman, Christodoulides said, will be tasked to \u201censure that the 14 principles of the European patients\u2019 rights charter will be implemented<\/strong> in Cyprus.\u201d
\nThe 14 rights outlined in the charter include the right of access to healthcare and the rights to preventative measures, information, consent, free choice, privacy and confidentiality, respect of patients\u2019 time, safety, to complain, and to innovation, among others.
\nHe added that those 14 rights \u201cmust be recognised and, most importantly, fully respected in every country, not just through nice words and nice statements, but through policies<\/strong>.\u201d
\nHe said that other forthcoming reforms will \u201cprovoke reactions\u201d among some but said their \u201csole objective is the protection of Gesy, which is the largest social reform seen in Cyprus to date.\u201d
\nOn the success of Gesy, he said that \u201cno one expected such a major reform to work without problems\u201d, and that the government intends to address the current issues faced by Gesy.
\n\u201cThere is important work we have to do as a state, but I believe that since the adoption of the patients\u2019 rights charter, important steps have been taken in this country, mainly because of the work carried out by Osak<\/strong>,\u201d he said.
\nHe added, \u201cwe have a duty as a state to listen to people\u2019s needs and to do our best to defend patients and their rights.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
