{"id":8980,"date":"2024-04-20T18:00:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-20T15:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8980"},"modified":"2024-04-20T18:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-20T15:00:26","slug":"nicosia-protest-demands-end-to-second-class-status-for-migrants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8980","title":{"rendered":"Nicosia protest demands end to second-class status for migrants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hundreds of people took to the streets of Nicosia on Saturday in a <strong>peaceful demonstration for equal rights<\/strong> covering all migrants living in Cyprus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1240938160\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1327136599\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-3236782519958-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The protest at Eleftheria square was held in memory of Anisur Rahman, a 23-year-old man from Bangladesh who fell to his death as he sought to escape a police raid in Limassol.<br \/>\nOrganised primarily by members of the African community living in Cyprus, they marched with a group of Greek Cypriots and Bangladeshi nationals who held placards reading \u2018humanity over nationality\u2019.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are being treated as if we want to cheat the system. But the reality is we work for below the minimum wage while prices are going up,\u201d they said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe work hard and contribute to Cyprus\u2019 economy,\u201d while at the same time live in fear.<br \/>\nThey said that Rahman\u2019s death has brought to light \u201cthe stark reality of how migrants are policed in Cyprus\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>All we want is a life free from fear<\/strong> of police harassment and violence,\u201d demonstrators said.<br \/>\nReports have surfaced contradicting the police\u2019s version of events leading to Rahman\u2019s death. Police claimed officers knocked on the door and received consent before stepping in to investigate.<br \/>\nNonetheless, a complaint has been filed to the independent authority investigating police, arguing the force barged down the door and began arresting people while they woke up in panic. Detainees have also claimed they experienced abuse in police hands.<br \/>\nProtestors on Saturday said \u201cthe dangers of this happening again are part of life for the majority of migrants and asylum seekers in Cyprus.\u201d<br \/>\nBetween 700-800 individuals attended the demo, saying \u201cwe love Cyprus\u201d stressing they seek integration, rather than any division.<br \/>\nThey also called for equal access to healthcare and an end to the dehumanisation of third-country nationals.<br \/>\n\u201cThose of us seeking asylum are <strong>treated as second-class citizens<\/strong> by the state and many employers.<br \/>\n\u201cReduced access to medical care, lower wage and racial discrimination are usual phenomena. We are constantly faced with the risk of deportation because of the government\u2019s policy, which a significant portion of media support and promote.\u201d<br \/>\nAmid heavy police presence, they called for an end to deportations.<br \/>\nCypriots attending the demo chanted: \u201csay it loud, say it clear, migrants are welcome here.\u201d<br \/>\nThis is the second protest since Rahman\u2019s death. The last one in Limassol also attracted hundreds of people who called his death a \u201cgovernment murder\u201d.<br \/>\nRahman\u2019s body is expected to be repatriated to his native Bangladesh soon, as friends have placed flowers at the site where he died saying \u2018Sorry Anis\u2019.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-777784 lazy\"
