{"id":8870,"date":"2024-04-19T20:00:45","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T17:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8870"},"modified":"2024-04-19T20:00:45","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T17:00:45","slug":"indians-vote-in-huge-election-dominated-by-jobs-hindu-pride-and-modi-updated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8870","title":{"rendered":"Indians vote in huge election dominated by jobs, Hindu pride and Modi (updated)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/indians-vote-in-huge-election-dominated-by-jobs-hindu-pride-and-modi-updated.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The first of India\u2019s almost one billion voters cast ballots on Friday in the country\u2019s multi-day election, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks a rare third term on the back of issues such as growth, welfare and Hindu nationalism.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1945236283\">\n<div id=\"cypru-642318119\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-9712921924130-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The vote pits Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) against an alliance of two dozen opposition parties that promise greater affirmative action and more handouts while stressing what they call the need to save democratic institutions.<br \/>\nNearly 970 million people are eligible to vote in the seven-phase exercise, the world\u2019s largest election, which runs through the peak of summer until June 1, with results set for June 4.<br \/>\nElection Commission figures after polls closed on Friday\u2019s first day of voting estimated voter turnout at 60%, with the small northeastern state of Tripura top of the list at 80% and the northwestern state of Rajasthan at the bottom with 51%.<br \/>\n\u201cPolling for the first phase\u2026recorded high voter turnout despite the heat wave,\u201d the panel said. \u201cThe voting percentage is likely to go upwards when reports from all polling stations are obtained.\u201d<br \/>\nFriday\u2019s vote covered 166 million voters in 102 constituencies across 21 states and territories, from Tamil Nadu in the south to Arunachal Pradesh on the Himalayan frontier with China.<br \/>\nOpinion polls have suggested the BJP will easily win a majority, even though voters worry about unemployment, inflation and rural distress in the world\u2019s most populous country and fastest growing major economy.<br \/>\n\u201cModi will come back to power, because apart from the religious push, his other work, in areas such as safety and security, is good,\u201d said Abdul Sattar, 32, a Muslim voter in the city of Kairana in the most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.<br \/>\nJobs were the chief concern for Mohammed Shabbir, another Muslim voter in Kairana. None of his eight children had regular employment, the 60-year-old driver said.<br \/>\n\u201cEven the Hindus are affected by a lack of jobs,\u201d he said, adding that the problem outweighed the appeal of Hindu nationalism in the Hindu-majority nation.<br \/>\nHindu nationalism is a key election theme, especially after Modi\u2019s consecration of a grand temple to Lord Ram in January on a site in Uttar Pradesh believed to be his birthplace, more than three decades after a Hindu mob destroyed a 16th-century mosque that had stood there, leading to nationwide religious riots.<br \/>\nIn 2019, the Supreme Court handed over the land to Hindus and ordered allotment of a separate plot to Muslims to build a new mosque.<br \/>\nCritics accuse Modi\u2019s government and party of treating India\u2019s 200 million minority Muslims unfairly to please their hardline Hindu base \u2013 an accusation that both deny.<br \/>\nModi aims to win 370 of parliament\u2019s 543 seats, up from 303 in 2019, hoping for a two-thirds majority that some analysts and opposition members fear could let his party usher in far-reaching constitutional changes.<br \/>\nSTRONG SOUTHERN PUSH<br \/>\nBut in Tamil Nadu, one of India\u2019s most developed states where the BJP is weak, voters seemed divided on whether Modi\u2019s strong push this time round would benefit his party.<br \/>\n\u201cModi has made India a peaceful country, particularly for Hindus,\u201d said S. Rajagopal, a three-wheel taxi driver in the state capital of Chennai.<br \/>\n\u201cThe BJP may not boost its vote share in Tamil Nadu but nationwide, Modi will win hands down again.\u201d<br \/>\nHowever, V. Parasuraman, 55, a businessman in construction, said the BJP had done little for Tamil Nadu, adding, \u201cPeople here are educated and \u2026 won\u2019t fall for Modi\u2019s sugar-coated words.\u201d<br \/>\nThe BJP campaign focuses on Modi\u2019s guarantee to deliver on promises to voters.<br \/>\n\u201cThe country has made up its mind,\u201d Modi said at a campaign rally on Friday.<br \/>\n\u201cAfter today\u2019s first round of voting, there is one thing visible\u2026the country wants a strong, stable government\u201d, and voting for the opposition alliance \u201cis as good as wasting your vote\u201d, he said.<br \/>\nCampaigning continues during the election process for seats that are scheduled to vote in later phases.<br \/>\nVictory for Modi would make him only the second Indian prime minister to be elected three times in a row, after post-independence leader Jawaharlal Nehru.<br \/>\nWEAK, FRAGMENTED OPPOSITION<br \/>\nSurveys show a big gap between the BJP and the opposition but political analyst Sandeep Shastri of research firm Lokniti Network said it was not \u201cnecessarily unsurmountable\u201d.<br \/>\n\u201cMany voters say that we take our decision on who to vote for during campaigning and many say we do it closer to the day of voting,\u201d he said. \u201cSo there is also scope for campaigning to impact the nature of the verdict.\u201d<br \/>\nBut some BJP insiders and analysts say the party is worried about complacency or overconfidence among voters and party members, and needs to draw more people to vote.<br \/>\nYet the opposition\u2019s INDIA alliance has struggled to forge unity.
