{"id":8804,"date":"2024-04-19T06:00:25","date_gmt":"2024-04-19T03:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8804"},"modified":"2024-04-19T06:00:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-19T03:00:25","slug":"cyprus-consistent-on-kosovo-non-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8804","title":{"rendered":"Cyprus , \u2018consistent\u2019 on Kosovo non-recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/cyprus-consistent-on-kosovo-non-recognition.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Cyprus is \u201cremaining consistent in its long-standing positions\u201d on the matter of Kosovo<\/strong>, foreign ministry spokesman Theodoros Gotsis said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1972527383\">\n<div id=\"cypru-754664553\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-9144767391897-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He was speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) in the aftermath of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Pace)\u2019s recommendation that Kosovo\u2019s application to join the Council of Europe be accepted.<br \/>\nHe said the government is \u201cfully committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states\u201d, and therefore \u201cdoes not recognise unilaterally declared independence.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>This position was expressed at the Council of Europe<\/strong> through the positions of the Cypriot representatives at the Pace,\u201d he added.<br \/>\nHe pointed out that at the same time, the government \u201cfully supports dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina which is facilitated by the European Union,\u201d and added that the final decision on Kosovo\u2019s membership or otherwise of the Council of Europe will be made by its Committee of Ministers.<br \/>\nCyprus is represented at the Committee of Ministers by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, who, given Cyprus\u2019 historical position on the matter, <strong>would be expected to vote against Kosovan membership<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSpeaking to the Cyprus Mail, Gotsis confirmed that a vote on the matter will take place at the Committee of Ministers in May, and that it will require a two thirds majority of ministers, 32 countries, to pass.<br \/>\nWhile he refrained from explicitly saying that Cyprus would vote against Kosovan membership in May, he reaffirmed that Cyprus\u2019 position on the matter is \u201clongstanding and unwavering\u201d.<br \/>\nBoth of Cyprus\u2019 MPs who were present at Tuesday\u2019s Pace meeting voted against recommending that Kosovo become a member of the Council of Europe, but those against the motion were outnumbered 131 to 29.<br \/>\nSpeaking after casting his vote against the motion, Akel MP George Loucaides said Kosovo\u2019s potential accession to the Council of Europe \u201c<strong>does not serve the goal of peace, security, and stability in the western Balkans<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added that such a development could \u201cfurther fuel tension and lead to the rise of nationalism in this highly troubled region.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added that Kosovo\u2019s Council of Europe membership entails \u201cthe risk of creating a negative precedent as other illegal separatist entities may seek international recognition.\u201d<br \/>\nDiko MP Christiana Erotokritou said her position was \u201ca matter of principle\u201d, that \u201cthe sovereignty and territorial integrity of internationally recognised states should never be compromised.\u201d<br \/>\nShe added, \u201cthe acceptance of the inclusion into the Council of Europe of entities which have unilaterally declared independence and are not member states of the United Nations <strong>sets a dangerous precedent, particularly in today\u2019s highly volatile international environment<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nCyprus\u2019 third representative, Disy\u2019s Nikos Tornaritis, was not present.<br \/>\nThe resolution that passed invited Kosovo to join the Council of Europe and to <strong>allocate the country three seats in the Pace \u2013 the same as Cyprus<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe bill did acknowledge the \u201cunprecedented circumstances of this application, as a number of Council of Europe member states do not recognise Kosovo as a state.\u201d<br \/>\nTo this end, it reads, \u201cdiplomacy, dialogue, and compromise are necessary to ensure that the prospective admission of Kosovo does not create a fracture in the unity of Council of Europe member states.\u201d<br \/>\nIt recommended therefore that Kosovo\u2019s Council of Europe membership be accepted \u201cwithout prejudice to individual member states; positions as regard the statehood of Kosovo.\u201d<br \/>\nIn addition, it reads, \u201cmember states, irrespective of the position they may express <strong>in relation to Kosovo\u2019s membership application, [must] respect the decision made<\/strong> \u2026 and collaborate sincerely and effectively in its implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cyprus maintains its long-standing position of not recognizing unilaterally declared independence, including that of Kosovo.
