{"id":8452,"date":"2024-04-16T19:01:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T16:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8452"},"modified":"2024-04-16T19:01:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T16:01:11","slug":"trump-returns-to-new-york-criminal-court-for-jury-selection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8452","title":{"rendered":"Trump returns to New York criminal court for jury selection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/trump-returns-to-new-york-criminal-court-for-jury-selection.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Donald\u00a0Trump arrived at a Manhattan courthouse for the second day of his\u00a0historic hush-money trial on Tuesday, as lawyers try to\u00a0choose 12\u00a0jurors to consider the guilt or innocence of<strong> the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-27985149\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1319624625\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-5806517998477-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The first day on Monday underscored\u00a0the challenges of the task.<br \/>\n<strong>Roughly half of\u00a096 potential\u00a0jurors questioned were dismissed after saying they could not impartially judge the polarizing businessman-turned-politicia<\/strong>n, who is mounting a comeback White House bid while battling four separate criminal cases.<br \/>\nA New York native who now lives in Florida,\u00a0Trump\u00a0was a fixture in the city\u2019s tabloid press for decades before he won the presidency as a Republican in 2016. But as a politician, he has never been able to count on the heavily Democratic city for votes.<br \/>\nManhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, has charged\u00a0Trump\u00a0with 34 felony counts of <strong>falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 election<\/strong>. Daniels says she had a sexual encounter with\u00a0Trump\u00a0about a decade beforehand.<br \/>\nTrump\u00a0has pleaded not guilty and denies an encounter took place.<br \/>\nTo prove a felony, prosecutors must show that\u00a0Trump\u00a0covered up the payment to conceal a crime like an illegal campaign contribution.<br \/>\nTrump\u00a0has said the payment was personal.\u00a0His lawyers have said there could have been reasons beyond his campaign to make the payment, such\u00a0as\u00a0sparing\u00a0himself and his family embarrassment.<br \/>\nIn other jurisdictions, he stands accused of mishandling classified information and trying to overturn his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. But the hush-money case may be the only one to go to trial before\u00a0Trump\u00a0faces Biden again in the Nov. 5 election.<br \/>\n<strong>If convicted,\u00a0Trump\u00a0would still be able to run for office and\u00a0serve as president\u00a0if he won.<\/strong> But a Reuters\/Ipsos poll found that half of independents and a quarter of his fellow Republicans would not vote for him if he is found guilty.<br \/>\nTrump\u00a0has pleaded not guilty in all four criminal cases, and says they are a plot by Biden\u2019s Democrats to neutralize him politically.<br \/>\nThough the New York case is centered on events that took place more than seven years ago, prosecutors are trying to hold\u00a0Trump\u00a0accountable for more recent conduct as well.<br \/>\nOn Monday, they asked Justice Juan Merchan to fine\u00a0Trump\u00a0$1,000 for each of three social media posts this month that criticized Daniels and\u00a0Michael Cohen,\u00a0Trump\u2018s former fixer who is expected to be a prominent witness in the trial.<br \/>\nUnder a\u00a0gag order\u00a0imposed by Merchan,\u00a0Trump\u00a0is barred from making statements about witnesses, court staff and family members that are meant to interfere with the case.\u00a0Trump\u2018s lawyer Todd Blanche said the former president was only responding to their criticism of him.<br \/>\nMerchan said he will consider the fines on April 23.<br \/>\nTrump\u00a0took to his social media platform Truth Social on Tuesday morning to criticize Merchan, saying the judge would not allow him to respond to <strong>\u201cpeople that are on TV lying and spewing hate all day long.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cTake off the Gag Order!!!\u201d he wrote.<br \/>\n<strong>NO SUPREME COURT VISIT<\/strong><br \/>\nJury selection is expected to consume the rest of the week, and the trial is scheduled to last through\u00a0at least May.\u00a0Trump\u00a0is required to be in court throughout, and on Monday Merchan denied a request for him to miss a session so he could attend a\u00a0hearing at the U.S. Supreme Court, where his lawyers will argue that\u00a0Trump\u00a0should not be prosecuted for actions he took as president.<br \/>\n\u201cHe thinks he\u2019s superior, I guess, to the Supreme Court. We\u2019ve got a real problem with this judge,\u201d\u00a0Trump\u00a0said after Monday\u2019s session.<br \/>\nThe 12 jurors selected for the trial, along with six alternates, will hear testimony from Daniels and Cohen, who has said he made the payments to buy her silence.<br \/>\nOther expected witnesses include David Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer tabloid, who prosecutors say ran stories to boost\u00a0Trump\u2018s 2016 campaign.<br \/>\nAlso due up is Karen McDougal, a former model for Playboy magazine who prosecutors say was paid by the National Enquirer to keep quiet
