{"id":8340,"date":"2024-04-15T22:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T19:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8340"},"modified":"2024-04-15T22:00:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T19:00:30","slug":"disparity-in-gaming-commission-board-allowances-raises-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=8340","title":{"rendered":"Disparity in gaming commission board allowances raises concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/disparity-in-gaming-commission-board-allowances-raises-concerns.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Members of the board on the Gaming &amp; Casino Supervision Commission get special treatment, pocketing around \u20ac800 a month while others on similar public bodies make \u20ac70, MPs heard on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-130881917\">\n<div id=\"cypru-620597991\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-4108461872698-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The earnings of board members of the gaming commission came up at the House finance committee, where the commission\u2019s executive director was requesting the release of funds for remuneration.<br \/>\nA representative of the auditor-general\u2019s office spoke of a \u2018two-tier system\u2019 in relation to the remuneration of people who sit on the boards of public bodies.<br \/>\nIt turns out the regular members of the board on the gaming commission make \u20ac800 a month, while the chairman earns \u20ac1,000.<br \/>\nThese numbers work out as the average monthly earnings over a year. Board members do not receive a salary per se, but rather an allowance for attending meetings. The auditor-general\u2019s office reported that last year the board held just nine meetings.<br \/>\nMoreover, for a period of five months not a single meeting took place.<br \/>\nBy comparison, people sitting on the boards of other public bodies get a \u20ac70 to \u20ac80 stipend per meeting they attend.<br \/>\nThe auditor-general\u2019s office also pointed out that the decision regarding the remuneration of the gaming commission was taken by the cabinet in February 2017. And this standalone decision was taken despite a prior decision by the cabinet generally regulating the earnings of people serving on the boards of public bodies.<br \/>\nWorse even, the rep claimed, the cabinet\u2019s decision regarding the gaming commission was not published at the time.<br \/>\nAn official representing the cabinet confirmed the 2017 decision, but said the cabinet is willing to reconsider it.<br \/>\nThe Audit Office said also they discovered that board members on the gaming commission get social insurance, as if they\u2019re on the permanent government payroll.<br \/>\nFacing the heat, a representative of the gaming commission said that when the legislation establishing the body was passed, there were no offices and no staff \u2013 and yet the commission succeeded in bringing to fruition the operation of the first casino within a year.<br \/>\nHarris Tsangarides, executive director of the commission, said that of the \u20ac27.6 million collected since the public body\u2019s establishment, only a third of the revenues have gone to the commission itself, the rest to the state treasury.<br \/>\nTsangarides said that whatever remuneration is decided going forward, the board members will keep working \u2013 even at zero pay.<br \/>\nMore generally, the executive director said they anticipate some \u20ac2.5 billion in gaming receipts from the casinos for this year \u2013 up from \u20ac1.8 billion last year.<br \/>\nApproximately 2,000 people work at the casinos, he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the
