{"id":7652,"date":"2024-04-10T19:00:10","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=7652"},"modified":"2024-04-10T19:00:10","modified_gmt":"2024-04-10T16:00:10","slug":"government-going-soft-on-church-over-illegal-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=7652","title":{"rendered":"Government , \u2018going soft\u2019 on church over illegal building"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/government-going-soft-on-church-over-illegal-building.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The government has taken a \u201cvery soft\u201d approach to dealing with the whole issue surrounding the illegal monastery being built in the Cape Greco area of Ayia Napa, the Cyprus Mail was told on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-96786614\">\n<div id=\"cypru-373596294\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-2728711756033-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe government seems to be taking the soft approach with the church,\u201d the head of the House environment committee and Greens MP Charalambos Theopemptou told the newspaper. He was speaking after a committee briefing by the Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou.<br \/>\nHe added that the committee expected more to be done by the government for the demolition of the illegal monastery.<br \/>\nHe said Cyprus is already in \u201ctrouble\u201d with the EU over violations the state allowed in environmentally protected Natura 2000 areas, and this cannot be allowed.<br \/>\nSpeaking after the session Akel MP Andreas Kafkalias said: \u201cNo one is above the law, certainly not the church.\u201d<br \/>\nHe added that the party\u2019s sole concern is the protection of the environment, especially with regard to protected areas.<br \/>\n\u201cWe express once again our strong concern about the full-frontal attack on the environment by illegal developments, the destruction of protected habitats and the piecemeal implementation of legislation regarding nature protection networks.\u201d<br \/>\nAt the briefing of the committee Panayiotou said: \u201cWe maintain our position that there must be a rectification of the illegalities and restoration of any environmental damage that may have been caused.\u201d<br \/>\nShe added that on March 29, the urban planning department issued a demolition order, and the environment department issued an order to have demolition plan filed, which was halted due to a church appeal.<br \/>\n\u201cDespite the appeal, we will issue demolition regulations at an ad hoc committee, set to happen this week,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nOn Monday, it emerged that architects and engineers involved in the construction of a monastery at the environmentally protected Natura 2000 site in Cape Greco\u00a0<strong>will appear before a disciplinary board<\/strong>.<br \/>\nLast month, the\u00a0<strong>European Commission has referred Cyprus to the <\/strong>EU Court of Justice\u00a0(ECJ) due to its failure to fulfil obligations under the Habitats Directive, which aims to protect over a thousand animal and plant species in
