Marking World Stray Animals Day, authorities on Friday announced plans to enhance and expand a dog shelter serving six municipalities in Nicosia.<\/p>\n
The day, observed globally on April 4, highlights the plight of homeless animals, with Cyprus accounting for about 200,000 strays, as rescue shelters have reached capacity.<\/p>\n
In a joint announcement, the municipalities of Nicosia, Strovolos, Aglandjia, Lakatamia, Agios Dhometios and Engomi said they acquired of a new site adjacent to the current temporary dog shelter in Paliometocho.<\/p>\n
Under an agreement inked with the interior ministry, the mayors secured a one-year lease on the property, renewable thereafter.<\/p>\n
Acknowledging the pressing issue of growing stray populations and the consequent demand for shelter space, the municipalities sought state land to establish a designated dog exercise area.<\/p>\n
Additionally, they pledged to undertake maintenance and upgrades of the existing facilities.<\/p>\n
