{"id":6668,"date":"2024-04-03T13:01:02","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T10:01:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6668"},"modified":"2024-04-03T13:01:02","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T10:01:02","slug":"turkey-inflation-hit-68-5-ahead-of-election-blow-to-ruling-party","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6668","title":{"rendered":"Turkey inflation hit 68.5% ahead of election blow to ruling party"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/turkey-inflation-hit-68-5-ahead-of-election-blow-to-ruling-party.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>Turkey\u2019s annual inflation rate climbed to 68.5 per cent in March, data showed on Wednesday, underscoring a major reason for the massive losses sustained by President Tayyip Erdogan\u2019s party in nationwide local elections at the weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-896510954\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1869643767\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-5938599525661-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Monthly inflation was 3.16 per cent, the Turkish Statistical Institute said, easing from 4.53 per cent and 6.7 per cent in the previous two months as fallout from wage hikes and other administered price rises at the start of the year faded.<br \/>\nThe consumer price data were a bit below expectations with annual inflation likely to rise through mid-year. The annual rate was expected to be 69.1 per cent in March and the monthly rate 3.5 per cent, a Reuters poll showed.<br \/>\nAnnual inflation \u2013 which has soared well above a 5 per cent target for years in Turkey, largely due to Erdogan\u2019s past unorthodox monetary policies \u2013 is seen falling to about 44 per cent by year end, above a central bank forecast of 36 per cent.<br \/>\nErdogan\u2019s AK Party was ousted from mayoral seats in several provinces and thumped by the main opposition in big cities Istanbul and Ankara on Sunday, its worst election loss since the AKP was founded more than two decades ago.<br \/>\nVoters punished Erdogan and his party largely over the cost-of-living crisis, AKP officials and analysts said.<br \/>\n\u201cWe knew that this election was going to be harder than others because we are applying a very strict fiscal policy that may taste bitter today but we know that it will help in the future,\u201d said Harun Armagan, an AKP central decision board member and vice chair of foreign relations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POLICY U-TURN<\/strong><br \/>\nThe central bank launched an aggressive monetary tightening cycle in June, reversing the low-rates policy Erdogan had overseen for years.<br \/>\nLast month the bank surprised analysts when it went further, hiking interest rates by another 500 basis points to 50 per cent due to what it called a deteriorating inflation outlook.<br \/>\nErdogan, addressing an AKP meeting on Tuesday, acknowledged that high inflation was having a big impact on voter behaviour, according to a readout from AKP sources.<br \/>\n\u201cParticularly the pensioners suffered a loss of welfare, and efforts to alleviate those hardships fell short,\u201d Erdogan was quoted as saying.<br \/>\nThe March consumer price inflation (CPI) data showed the biggest monthly rises in education, up 13.1 per cent, and communication at 5.65 per cent. Food and non-alcoholic drinks, housing, restaurants and culture price measures also drove inflation.<br \/>\nShortly after the data release, Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said recent monetary and fiscal tightening would help anchor inflation expectations and support disinflation.<br \/>\n\u201cWe will do whatever is needed until we achieve our price stability target, our main priority,\u201d he said on social media platform X.<br \/>\nIn February, annual consumer price inflation (CPI) was 67.07 per cent.<br \/>\nThe domestic producer price index was up 3.29 per cent month-on-month in
