{"id":6614,"date":"2024-04-03T01:00:38","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T22:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6614"},"modified":"2024-04-03T01:00:38","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T22:00:38","slug":"doubts-raised-over-development-of-larnaca-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6614","title":{"rendered":"Doubts raised over development of Larnaca port"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/doubts-raised-over-development-of-larnaca-port.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Serious concerns were raised on Tuesday over whether the company assigned to take on the expansion and restoration of Larnaca port will be able to complete the works.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-4929157\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1508417448\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6035726887696-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The company, <strong>Kition Ocean Holdings, was assigned the \u20ac1.2 billion project two years ago but has yet to start any of the works<\/strong>, it has emerged.<br \/>\nWorks on the project, according to what had originally been announced, were meant to start in April 2023, but received an extension to March-April 2024. However, this condition has also not been met, and works are now meant to start in June 2024.<br \/>\nBut Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades said there are now doubts whether this deadline will be honoured by the company.<br \/>\nA spokesperson for Kition Ocean Holdings told the StockWatch website \u201cunder the terms of the contract, the company does not have the authority to make statements or provide updates on the progress of the project. Only the government has that authority\u201d.<br \/>\nHowever, <strong>Vafeades expressed strong concern about the progress of the project<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHe said that \u201cuntil we see real projects and actions on the ground, we will not be complacent.<br \/>\n\u201cWithout seeing works, I cannot say I am happy,\u201d he added.<br \/>\nHe warned that <strong>if the company does not honour the contractual obligations, then \u201cwe will act accordingly<\/strong>\u201d.<br \/>\nRegarding the consultation with the company, Vafeades explained that both he and the project management team are in constant contact with the members of the consortium.<br \/>\n\u201cI personally had a meeting with them a few weeks ago during which I made it clear that the major projects should start because several extensions have been granted to date by the relevant committee of the ministry, with the last one expiring in June 2024,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHowever, Larnaca Disy MP Prodromos Alambritis said that two years into the company taking the plan over, they haven\u2019t seen any works, aside from a few small projects.<br \/>\nSpeaking to Cyprus Mail, Larnaca Akel MP Andreas Pasiourtides said <strong>the latest information they have is that work will start in either May or June<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u201cWe are closely monitoring, and if there is problem we will react and request for a detailed report and answers on the project,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe project was originally approved by former President Nicos Anastasiades in April 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The company assigned to expand and restore Larnaca port, Kition Ocean Holdings, has not started any of the works on the \u20ac1.2 billion project two years after being assigned.
