{"id":6450,"date":"2024-04-01T22:00:26","date_gmt":"2024-04-01T19:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6450"},"modified":"2024-04-01T22:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-01T19:00:26","slug":"money-laundering-investigations-over-monk-scandal-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=6450","title":{"rendered":"Money laundering investigations over monk scandal underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/money-laundering-investigations-over-monk-scandal-underway.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The two monks embroiled in a sex and cash scandal at Osiou Avakoum monastery may be called to testify before the church\u2019s investigative committee, it was reported on Monday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-130585758\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1761841141\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-7246416569401-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It has been almost a month since the monks were allegedly found with \u20ac800,000 in cash and captured on camera engaging in sexual activity with each other.<br \/>\nA six-member investigative committee within the church appointed by the Holy Synod has been working at a \u2018feverish pace\u2019 taking statements from those involved.<br \/>\nThe monks however have yet to be called in. The committee said they were saving them for last, however a source close to the matter said <strong>their time may come this week<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is what I understand.\u201d<br \/>\nThe legal team for the monks has disputed the process the Holy Synod chose to follow, arguing it goes against the church\u2019s law.<br \/>\n\u201cIt appears they\u2019re trying to subvert the process. This might mean the monks may not even appear,\u201d the source said.<br \/>\nPolice investigations are still underway, and also include a video purportedly showing a monk beating a woman at the monastery. The monks dispute the authenticity of the video, however officers are also examining a separate report of sexual harassment.<br \/>\nThe financial element of the scandal is currently being scrutinised by police\u2019s financial crime unit as well as the anti-money laundering unit (Mokas).<br \/>\nAuthorities are investigating money laundering in the matter, as well as <strong>obtaining money with false representations. <\/strong><br \/>\nMPs have called for a thorough investigation of church donations for money laundering. The interior ministry has also shared information over fundraiser applications made by the monastery \u2013 including one of \u20ac3 million, where it failed to submit the necessary financial statements.<br \/>\nSpecialist investigators are also exploring a number of videos captured on CCTV. The burning question is the sound that was being recorded. The monks have argued the sound was disabled \u2013 with their legal team suggesting Tamasos Bishop Isias called in a favour with his brother who works at the secret service to remotely activate the sound.<br \/>\nPolice will call in the company that installed the CCTV to explore the matter, while the servers are being combed through.<br \/>\nA number of faithful have made statements of being \u2018<strong>cheated out of money\u2019<\/strong> for which police have begun securing bank statements linked to the monks.<br \/>\nThey are also exploring land registry records for property allegedly in their name.<br \/>\nPolice denied giving special treatment to the church\u00a0because of its powerful influence, both for the lack of any arrests and the fact that officers accompanied
