Officer \u201cGrinch\u201d was in a generous spirit in the days ahead of Christmas.<\/p>\n
Colonel Lou Caputo of the Monroe County Sheriff\u2019s Office donned the\u00a0Grinch\u00a0costume and worked with other deputies to pull over speeding drivers on the Florida Keys Overseas Highway at Key Largo.<\/p>\n
Those who were only a little over the speed limit were given a choice by Officer\u00a0Grinch.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause it is the holiday season, if they\u2019re just going a few miles an hour over the speed limit what we\u2019ll do, we\u2019ll give you a choice of the citation or an onion,\u201d said Caputo.<\/p>\n
He said the initiative was inspired by the Christmas classic \u201cHow the\u00a0Grinch\u00a0Stole Christmas,\u201d about an onion-loving fictional character created by Dr. Seuss and played by Jim Carrey in the 2000 film.<\/p>\n
As well as being handed an onion, offending drivers are given a lesson on slowing down.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though you\u2019re hectic, it\u2019s busy. Slow down. Let\u2019s keep our kids safe throughout the holiday season,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The option caught many drivers off-guard but Caputo said the onion option was the definite winner.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they choose the citation, we\u2019ll probably have to take them out and do a sobriety test on them,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n
