perform other duties<\/strong> in addition to or instead of their own jobs, leaving hospitals short of nurses, nurses\u2019 union Pasyno chairman Christos Christodoulou said on Friday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1033572210\">\n<div id=\"cypru-836522282\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6197834290065-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Christodoulou was addressing the House finance committee and explained that nurses are the largest single profession being seconded from the public sector to the State health services (Okypy) \u2013 around 3,500 in total.<br \/>\nHowever, he said, a not inconsiderable proportion of those 3,500 nurses\u2019 time is being misused.<br \/>\nIn this regard, he said \u201c<strong>we will have serious problems in the end if no one takes control.<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cInstead of being on wards and working in clinical positions, they go to Okypy, who then send them somewhere else, and hospitals are being left without nurses.\u201d<br \/>\nHe said the nurses are \u201cdoing anything but nursing\u201d, adding that there is a \u201crampant trend of nurses being sent to do other things without replacement.\u201d<br \/>\nCommittee chairwoman and Diko MP Christiana Erotokritou said, \u201cI cannot have a shortage of nurses with all the consequences thereof and then have <strong>250 nurses performing clerical duties<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nShe described the issue as a \u201cpathogen\u201d and said the matter should be discussed in the House health committee.<br \/>\nThe matter of nurses\u2019 secondments came to the fore in the committee meeting as MPs were discussing a bill to lift the limitation regarding the maximum duration of a public sector secondment.<br \/>\nDisy MP Onoufrios Koulla said the bill \u201cintroduces in a different way another concept that we would have otherwise introduced anyway,\u201d saying that his party had long maintained that it should be possible to <strong>permanently transfer a public sector employee from one branch of the public sector to another<\/strong>.<br \/>\n\u201cFor us, the state is a single employer,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe added that \u201cwhat we need to see are the correct organisational charts of each ministry and each department\u201d with a view to conducting a \u201csystematic review\u201d into staffing.<br \/>\nThis should be done, he said, \u201cespecially at a time when we are trying to invest a few hundred million euros into e-government.\u201d<br \/>\nAkel MP Andreas Kafkalias said the move does not go far enough, saying \u201ca more substantial act should have been put forward by the executive.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cLet\u2019s see what we have done so far, what we have achieved through the current legislation, evaluate the data, and let the executive come through a dialogue with the trade unions and seriously and responsibly discuss solutions,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nA representative from trade union Sek said the union \u201capplauds the new effort being made,\u201d and added that existing problems are \u201cslowly being corrected\u201d.<br \/>\nRepresentatives of unions Pasydy and civil servants\u2019 union Asdyk were both in favour of the bill but <strong>called on MPs to bring forward amendments to make it \u201cfairer for employees\u201d<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThey argued for the possibility of an open list being created, on which employees who are open to being seconded could
