{"id":5954,"date":"2024-03-28T21:00:37","date_gmt":"2024-03-28T19:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5954"},"modified":"2024-03-28T21:00:37","modified_gmt":"2024-03-28T19:00:37","slug":"traffic-fines-same-penalties-longer-payment-period","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5954","title":{"rendered":"Traffic fines: same penalties, longer payment period"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/traffic-fines-same-penalties-longer-payment-period.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Out-of-court fines for traffic violations will largely remain the same but offenders will have more time to pay them, according to tweaks to the legislation discussed in parliament on Thursday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1388058353\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1745451324\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-9597867518340-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The House transport committee was reviewing six government bills amending laws governing traffic fines and the use of cameras in cities.<br \/>\nPresenting the bills, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis said the \u20ac300 fine for crossing the \u2018stop\u2019 line at an intersection will not change. But the amount payable would be slashed by half if the fine is settled within 30 days.<br \/>\nMPs heard that to date the state has collected \u20ac9.3 million from some 320,000 paid fines, while 24,165 fines remain unpaid.<br \/>\nVafeadis said also that one of the coming changes will see increasing the deadline for paying a fine from 45 to 60 days.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s similar to paying in instalments, because people get more time to collect the [fine] amount, while this also avoids extra administrative costs,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe objective of traffic cameras is to reduce the number of accidents and traffic violations at intersections, the minister noted.<br \/>\nLast year, authorities recorded 20,000 instances of drivers running a red light.<br \/>\n\u201cWith the installation of the cameras at intersections, these are monitored 24 hours a day, and no one can get away with a violation,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nVafeadis revealed that many members of the public have contacted the ministry complaining about the amount of the fines.<br \/>\nHe conceded that some of the fines are \u201ccrippling\u201d. However, a system of deterrence needs to exist, so authorities must find the sweet spot between that and excessive punishment of wayward motorists.<br \/>\nFor his part, chair of the transport committee Marinos Mousiouttas (Dipa) remarked that \u201cit\u2019s extremely unfair for someone to pay \u20ac25 for going over the first stop line, and \u20ac300 for going over the second line.\u201d<br \/>\nAkel MP Costas Costa said running a red light is a serious offence, but at the same time many drivers are caught out because of the imperfect technical system.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s no excuse that we [the government] won\u2019t place an order for traffic lights with a countdown timer. We either should have a countdown timer, or the green light should flash on and off.\u201d<br \/>\nValentinos Fakondis, also of Akel, noted that the camera system has turned into \u201ca tax collection system in the hands of the government\u201d.<br \/>\nRegarding the stiff fines, Diko MP Christos Orfanides said that 50 per cent of the population are either low-income earners or
