{"id":5782,"date":"2024-03-27T23:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-03-27T21:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5782"},"modified":"2024-03-27T23:00:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T21:00:30","slug":"akamas-debacle-will-cost-cyprus-dearly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5782","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Akamas debacle will cost Cyprus dearly\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/akamas-debacle-will-cost-cyprus-dearly.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>MPs piled on the pressure to Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou on Wednesday to <strong>come clean over the contentious <\/strong><strong>investigation on the Akamas road works<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-694258778\">\n<div id=\"cypru-612260213\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-6598069351118-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The topic has been cause for fury, with Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides embroiled after he requested the report last year as part of his investigation over the matter.<br \/>\nThe government has yet to hand over the investigation to Michaelides, though the former agriculture minister conceded the works on Akamas were not properly done, with various irregularities identified.<br \/>\nDuring Wednesday\u2019s House environment committee, Panayiotou pledged the road works would resume on April 2 and be wrapped by the first week of May.<br \/>\nMichaelides however charged there was an obstruction to his work, as the investigation has not been handed over to the audit service which seeks to carry out a probe on whether there have been <strong>irreversible damages to Akamas<\/strong>, the cost of the failures and who is responsible.<br \/>\nAccording to Michaelides, the case boils down to a contractor who was chosen by the government and will now make claims for the delays that he himself is responsible for.<br \/>\nIt was the forestry department that signed the deal with the specific contractor, which Michaelides said poses a raft of questions.<br \/>\nMichaelides asked for starters, what were the instructions by the forestry department to the engineer to suspend the works? What were the instructions from the engineer to the contractor? What will this mean in terms of costs? What is the ministry\u2019s plan?<br \/>\nPanayiotou pledged the government\u2019s priority is to highlight Akamas\u2019 natural wealth and ensure projects carried out leave no impact to the environment.<br \/>\nAkel MP Nicos Kettiros said it was unfathomable that the government was admitting restoration works would be required \u201cbut <strong>the ministry is not telling society who caused this damage<\/strong>.\u201d<br \/>\nDisy MP Prodromos Alambritis raised the question of who will pay the price for all the mishaps, while independent MP Alexandra Attalides said Akamas\u2019 destruction was the result of Cyprus\u2019 construction-driven policy.<br \/>\n\u201cThis destruction may not be reversible.
