{"id":5760,"date":"2024-03-27T20:01:26","date_gmt":"2024-03-27T18:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5760"},"modified":"2024-03-27T20:01:26","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T18:01:26","slug":"north-municipality-to-conduct-local-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5760","title":{"rendered":"North municipality to conduct local census"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/north-municipality-to-conduct-local-census.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>A municipality in the north is set to <strong>hold a census, breaking ranks with the current \u2018government\u2019 policy <\/strong>of calculating populations via projection and avoiding censuses.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-2093661791\">\n<div id=\"cypru-2126854929\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-9226497852699-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The municipality in question is the combined Lapithos, Karavas, and Myrtou municipality, with mayor Firat Ataser announcing the move on Wednesday.<br \/>\nHe said the census will involve municipal workers visiting people\u2019s homes in the area.<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>A comprehensive census will be organised<\/strong> to better understand the population structure in the region and to direct our municipal services in accordance with your demands and needs,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe planned census contravenes \u2018prime minister\u2019 Unal Ustel\u2019s insistence last year that the \u2018government\u2019 would be able to plan for the future using population projections.<br \/>\nHowever, many believe the most recent official population estimate made by the north\u2019s statistics institute, revealed in January to be 399,727, to be wildly short of the true figure.<br \/>\nTurkish Cypriot \u2018MP\u2019 Serhat Akpinar said <strong>he believes the north\u2019s population to be a million<\/strong>, and told the Cyprus Mail the north \u201cmust limit and stop\u201d its handing out of \u2018citizenships\u2019 to be able to stem its population growth.<br \/>\nTurkish Cypriot Mukhtars\u2019 Association chairman Akay Darbaz concurred with Akpinar\u2019s estimate, <strong>describing the growth of the north\u2019s population as \u201cscary\u201d<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAt the same time, the north\u2019s communications authority (BTHK) revealed that there are a total of 996,401 registered mobile subscribers in the north.<br \/>\nHowever, both Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and \u2018interior minister\u2019 Dursun Oguz both insisted that the official estimate of around 400,000 is more or less correct.<br \/>\n\u201c<strong>We have to accept it<\/strong>,\u201d Oguz added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A municipality in the north is set to hold a census, breaking ranks with the current \u2018government\u2019 policy of calculating populations via projection and avoiding censuses.
