{"id":5632,"date":"2024-03-27T07:00:30","date_gmt":"2024-03-27T05:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5632"},"modified":"2024-03-27T07:00:30","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T05:00:30","slug":"mastercard-visa-reach-30-billion-settlement-over-credit-card-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5632","title":{"rendered":"Mastercard, Visa reach $30 billion settlement over credit card fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/mastercard-visa-reach-30-billion-settlement-over-credit-card-fees.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Visa (V.N) and Mastercard (MA.N) reached an estimated $30 billion settlement to limit credit and debit card fees for merchants, with some savings likely to be passed on to consumers through lower prices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1480645476\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1527586751\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-8177309942858-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The antitrust settlement is one of the largest in US history, and upon court approval would resolve claims in litigation that began in 2005.<br \/>\nMerchants have long accused Visa and Mastercard of charging inflated swipe fees, or interchange fees, when shoppers used credit or debit cards, and barring them through \u201canti-steering\u201d rules from directing customers toward cheaper means of payment.<br \/>\nUnder the settlement announced on Tuesday, Visa and Mastercard will reduce interchange rates by four basis points (0.04 percentage points) in the United States for three years, and cap rates for five years.<br \/>\nBoth card networks also agreed to remove anti-steering provisions. They denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle.<br \/>\nThe fee rollbacks and caps alone are worth $29.79 billion, according to court papers, and Visa estimated that small businesses comprise more than 90 per cent of the settling merchants.<br \/>\nJoseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist hired by the merchants as an expert, in an affidavit said the settlement \u201cgreatly enhances merchants\u2019 freedom to steer customers using the linchpin of competition\u2013prices,\u201d and could lead to \u201cvery substantial\u201d savings for merchants.<br \/>\n\u201cCompetition among merchants results in these cost savings being passed on to customers in the form of lower prices,\u201d Stiglitz added.<br \/>\nLast March, the federal appeals court in Manhattan upheld a related $5.6 billion class-action settlement by Visa and Mastercard and covered about 12 million merchants.<br \/>\nThat settlement did not resolve what kinds of fees Visa and Mastercard could impose, and not all
