{"id":5282,"date":"2024-03-23T17:00:19","date_gmt":"2024-03-23T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5282"},"modified":"2024-03-23T17:00:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-23T15:00:19","slug":"tax-department-to-look-into-scandal-hit-monastery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/?p=5282","title":{"rendered":"Tax department to look into scandal hit monastery"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ch.jfdi.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/tax-department-to-look-into-scandal-hit-monastery.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>The tax department said on Saturday it is examining the books at the scandal hit Osiou Avakoum monastery to see if it conformed with all taxation requirements in Cyprus.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cypru-video-ads\" id=\"cypru-1137478280\">\n<div id=\"cypru-1188520700\" data-cypru-trackid=\"478051\" data-cypru-trackbid=\"1\" class=\"cypru-target\">\n<div id=\"gpt-ad-2941019993313-0\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The tax department is taking all the actions it considers appropriate in connection with the audit on the degree of compliance of the monastery with its tax obligations, according to information from Cypriot News Agency (CNA).<br \/>\nIn particular, <strong>the department\u2019s checks relate to compliance with the tax obligations <\/strong>of both the monastery itself and the individuals involved in the case under consideration.<br \/>\nFive monks at the monastery have currently been suspended by the Holy Synod, while suspect economic activity has been drawn into question by both the church and police since the outbreak of a number of scandals at the beginning of March.<br \/>\nIncome to the monastery is being investigated, while <strong>questions have been raised about business activities being conducted at the monastery<\/strong>.<br \/>\nOn Friday it emerged that the monastery applied for a \u20ac3 million fundraiser to the interior ministry in 2020. However, it never submitted any of the necessary financial statements afterwards.<br \/>\nThe application, aimed at collecting money to expand the monastery, was rubberstamped by the Tamassos Bishopric.<br \/>\nThe latest revelations are part of the seemingly unending scandal surrounding the Osiou Avakoum monastery in Fterikoudes. So far, police are investigating financial crimes, sexual harassment and abuse which allegedly took place at the monastery. The anti-money laundering unit is also involved.<br \/>\nA safe box was found with \u20ac800,000 at the monastery, with the cash transferred under police watch to the Tamassos Bishopric on March 5 in the presence of far-right Elam party leader Christos Christou.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The tax department in Cyprus is examining the books at Osiou Avakoum monastery to determine if it has met all taxation requirements.
