The announcement by\u00a0Kate, Britain\u2019s Princess of Wales, on Friday that she was having treatment for cancer should finally put to bed the speculation about her health, royal commentators said.<\/p>\n

Rumours and gossip on social media, in newspapers and even some U.S. talk shows have abounded since\u00a0Kate\u00a0underwent abdominal surgery in January, meaning she had to take a leave of absence from royal engagements while she recovered.
\n\u201cI would hope it would put the speculation to rest,\u201d royal biographer Claudia Joseph said in an interview.
\n\u201cObviously, they would hope the speculation ends but, in reality, it\u2019s social media and people are often incredibly viral and troll people left right and centre\u2026 They speculate and, and talk absolute nonsense.\u201d
\nEven though her office in Kensington Palace had said she was not expected to return to her public role until after Easter, which falls on March 31,,\u00a0Kate\u2018s absence did not stop the speculation spreading and making headlines across the globe.
\nThis intensified after her husband, heir-to-the-throne Prince William, pulled out of attending a memorial service at Windsor Castle for his godfather, the late King Constantine of Greece, for an unspecified \u201cpersonal matter\u201d.
\nWhen she apologised earlier this month after her office issued a photograph of her with her three children, which she had edited, to mark Mother\u2019s Day on March 10, the rumour mill reached fever pitch.
\nEven a video taken of her with William at a nearby farm shop last weekend failed to quell the conspiracy theories or demands for answers from the royals.
\n\u201cThe princess wanted to share this information when she and the prince felt it was right for them as a family,\u201d Kensington Palace said.
\nIn her video\u00a0message,\u00a0Kate\u00a0explained that she and William had been determined to protect her privacy and allow their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, time to understand what was happening.
\n\u201cIt has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I\u2019ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful,\u201d said the princess, often still known by her maiden name\u00a0Kate\u00a0Middleton.
\n\u201cThis of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family.\u201d
\nINTENSE SPECULATION<\/strong>
\nWilliam is known to be fiercely protective of his family\u2019s privacy and was furious when a French magazine published topless photographs of\u00a0Kate, taken from a long distance, in 2012.
\nRoyal experts said the manner of\u00a0Kate\u2018s message was both a reflection of the recent speculation and a means of shutting it down.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re not used to seeing something like this and I think this is a direct response and reaction to the social media fervour over what she\u2019s been dealing with and all the speculation,\u201d said Erin Hill, the U.S. magazine People\u2019s senior royal editor.
\n\u201cSo I think she\u2019s decided she wanted to address this head on with no speculation about how she\u2019s doing, just her to camera, seeing her there in the flesh, making this very personal announcement.\u201d
\nThe last few years have been very difficult for the royal family. The revelation about\u00a0Kate\u00a0follows news that William\u2019s father King Charles is also battling cancer less than 18 months after succeeding his mother Queen Elizabeth following her death in September 2022.
\nThere has also been the high profile falling out with William\u2019s younger brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan since they moved to California in 2020.
\nTourists and passers-by outside Buckingham Palace in central London expressed sympathy for\u00a0Kate.
\n\u201cI feel like everyone is making a big deal over everything, and all the TV since I\u2019ve been here, I think it\u2019s making a huge mess about something very little,\u201d Victoria Bonet, 22, a tourist from France, said of the speculation about\u00a0Kate.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s OK to worry about\u00a0Kate\u00a0and the king, but then I think they deserve to have their private life as well.\u201d
\nJack Friend, 25, said it had been a hard time for the royals generally.
